Pipe SmokerBrahms’ Alto Rhapsody
Brahms’ four symphonies are superb. I also like his Tragic Overture, Hungarian Dances, and a few other pieces. Beyond those, he wrote a LOT of music that doesn’t appeal to me all.
Then there’s his Alto Rhapsody (Op. 53). It’s a wonderful twelve-minute work for contralto, orchestra, and male chorus. The last five minutes are ethereal.
I have two Classical FM station apps on my iPhone: KUSC and WQXR. Neither of them has ever presented Alto Rhapsody in my experience. But you can find it on Amazon Music (paid, at least) and Apple Classical.
I recommend the work.
