Godzilla Minus One
I took our 12yo daughter to see it and she loved it. I would have liked more carnage, but it was a great time for sure!

I'm in, but I am wondering just what they mean by "minus one". Is it so obvious that I should be embarrassed for asking?

That’s a good question. Apparently, Japan following WW2 was starting at Zero. So, essentially it’s lowest point. With Godzilla showing up and wreaking havoc, it set them back further. Into the negative, so to speak. Putting them at Minus One.

The official explanation is that the destruction of WW2 took Japan back to zero (I.e. having to rebuild its society) and now the added destruction caused by Godzilla takes them even farther back (the minus one). However, that’s not ever really explained in the movie, and doesn’t even make a lot of sense, at least to me anyway.

I’ll definitely be seeing this- huge Godzilla fan and have been since I was a kid. Can’t wait!

My daughter, who watches her fair share of Japanese cartoons, says “Minus One” refers to the origins of the subject/show.

Saw it last night- it was every bit as engaging as I’d hoped it would be, and harkened back to the original 1954 movie that kicked off the longest running movie franchise in history. I wouldn’t exactly call it a remake, but there were many parallels to the original story. The ending leaves it open to additional movies which I would LOVE to see blossom into remakes of the movies of my childhood with modern special effects rather than rubber suits and model sets.

Several years ago at a Comicon convention, a studio floated a teaser trailer for a Gamera movie; for whatever reason it didn’t materialize although it garnered instant interest. I would be very much interested in seeing a rebirth of that franchise as well.

Excellent, really enjoyed it. Was a little worried as we saw it in an older theater [AMC Deerbrook for those in N Houston] & there was no picture when the trailers started, they got it fixed by the end of the last trailer.

Wastes no time getting started, and felt well paced, never really drags at all.

Shocking they did it with only $15M
I understand the earlier comment about more carnage, but it was a good balance of the human aspect & 'Godzilla destroy'.

Left it open for a second & wouldn't hesitate, if it's as good as this one was.

Mild/cryptic 'spoiler'
I'm curious what the mark at the end signifies?

Saw it today. I liked it. It was really well done, especially considering the small budget.

Saw it tonight. Agree with y'all. What an unexpectedly good film. Not your typical monster movie at all.

This is now streaming on Netflix. Watched it last night and it was amazingly moving. The special effects were great. I can't believe this movie only cost $15 million. Ten times better than the recent Godzilla/Kong movies that cost over ten times as much.

The way I have heard it is after the nukes brought them to zero. Godzilla brings them to minus one

Post-war Japan, immediately after defeat and surrender: we are now at zero status.

Godzilla decides to shows up shortly thereafter: uh oh, we now have gone from zero to minus one. Meaning it now really sucks to be us.

Thanks for the Netflix heads up. WOW what an awesome flick. Truly frightening at points. Great human cast/story. I mean I literally got choked up at points. Amazing visuals and sound. There were really only two minor points that “looked CGI”. I enjoyed the musical score as well.

Easily the Best Godzilla movie at least since the original.

What they accomplished with such a comparatively small budget is amazing. Now I want to see the black and white cut.

This popped up when I opened Netflix tonight and just the preview looked pretty incredible. Now seeing it seems to have the SF seal of approval I will try to find time to watch it.

Watched it last night after the storms blew through Dallas.
It is true to the hype.
Very well made and truly Japanese.
The opinions reflected after war, and the years after.
Well paced an NO SHAKY CAM.
