Staring back from the abyss |
I'm not quite sure how I came across this recipe, but I'm glad I did! These things are wonderful. Like a soft dinner roll stuffed with goodness. https://tastykitchen.com/recip...rok-cabbage-pockets/ Description A German recipe. I actually love these so much, I’ve been known to eat them for breakfast. And if you’ve got cabbage haters in the family, just substitute rice! Ingredients 2 packages (7g Packet) Yeast ½ cups Sugar 1-½ Tablespoon Salt 3-½ cups Warm Water ½ cups Oil 1 Tablespoon Vinegar 8 cups Flour 2 cloves Garlic, Minced 1 whole Onion, Chopped 1 pound Ground Beef 1 whole Cabbage, Shredded Salt And Pepper, to taste Preparation Mix the yeast, sugar, sat, warm water, oil, vinegar, and flour together. Let rise 1 hour. Punch down. Let rise 45 minutes. Roll out to about 1/16″ thick. Saute garlic and onions; add ground beef and fry until browned. Add cabbage and fry until tender (tastes better if cabbage is browned well). Salt and pepper to taste. Cut the dough into 5×5″ squares and put a generous portion of the beef mixture on the middle of each square. Gather all 4 corners together and pinch shut each diagonal seam toward the center. Turn upside down on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Brush with butter when they come out of the oven. ---------- The only thing I'd recommend is doubling the filling recipe as this makes a metric shit-ton of dough. Sounds complicated, but it's really not. Just a bit time consuming. Worth it though. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

My Mom made these! They were delicious. What she called them was "Beer Rocks". No alcohol was ever served in our home and it seemed strange to me that we'd have something with beer in it. My Mom died four years ago, I'm going to make them and remember her. Thanks for posting the recipe. ____ I'm filled with gratitude for the blessings I've received.

Thanks for the suggestion! A little dijon zinged them up just right. Next time I may slip a little swiss cheese in there as well. I've got about 50 of them to eat first though. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Yep. These "Eastern European Hot Pockets" go by several different names, including Bierocks, Pierogis, Runzas, and Boreks.

I must humbly disagree with the pierogi reference. Different dough, and pierogies are are boiled and/or fried vs. baked. They are also much more of a pain in the ass to make. Good stuff stuffed into dough though...yeah. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.
