Get ready, the movie is good, the book is much better.
I will say, Rocky and Stratt were almost exactly how I'd pictured them in my head.
The ship, I had a mental image of a much smaller craft.

honestlouI have to be contrarian. My wife and I saw it today, along with my sister-in-law. It’s been several years since I’ve read the book, and neither of them have. My opinion is “meh”.
It was long, and felt long. They could have easily cut 45 minutes. Compared to the book, it wasn’t just science light. It was practically science non-existent. My wife and her sister didn’t notice this obviously, and it was enough for them to know that something bad was happening and they needed to fix it. And I think they understood the choice he made toward the end. (spoiler averted)
It was okay, and I’m not quite sorry I saw it. But it did feel a bit like wasted time. I think the run time is 2 hr 36 minutes, and I think that maybe the 36 minutes was meaningful dialogue and 2 hours was CGI space. And I didn’t feel the look was nearly as good as in “Gravity”, and that was over a decade ago. That could have been because Gravity had Earth as a magnificent background.
And I found one major scene completely ridiculous. I want to avoid spoilers, so I’ll just say that when you go fishing, there’s just no need to jump in the water to retrieve your fish. I don’t think that gives anything away if you haven’t seen it yet, and if you do I’d like to know if I missed something there.
I had read The Martian a few years before the movie came out, and I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie. This not so much. On any scale, I’d give Project Hail Mary about 1/2 of what I’d give The Martian. I can’t in good conscience recommend it.

goose5I enjoyed it. One thing. The previews began at 12:45. End credits 3:45. For the love of God is editing a lost art.

VgexI enjoyed it. They went a bit heavy with the visuals, but I understand this is a visual medium so I can forgive it. I would have preferred a bit more science though.

2000Z-71Saw it tonight with the girlfriend and her 15 year old son in 4D. We all enjoyed it. First movie I’ve actually wanted to go out to the movies for. The 4D was a little over the top, definitely learned a lesson, drink down your large Coke early before putting it in the cup holder because the armrests and the cup holders go rocking and rolling with the seats.

GeorgeairGood production I thought and as others noted stays pretty true to the book without creating too much drag and a 4-hour event. Was fun watching with wife who has not yet finished the book but wanted to go ahead and go. Especially the ending, which is sorta a buzzkill for someone who will be reading that in a week or so.

FenderBenderIt's not often a movie gets broadly good reviews anymore. Wife and I went to see it at the theater closer to our house where we've not been yet.
her review was movie good, theater bad. I'm in full agreement. We'll have to try their imax/imax like offering I hope the seats are better we can walk to this theater.

LoswsmithI went with my wife and 18 yr old son. I have read the book and neither of them did. We all really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job making the book into a movie, and they loved the story.

oddballWe just got back from an IMAX 70 mm film showing, well worth the extra cost, this film was very good. Very smart, family oriented popcorn movie; did not read the book yet, so as a standalone, we thoroughly enjoyed it. No agenda or political undertones, no sex or violence or even profanity, it's almost a throwback to the way movies used to be made. And as with my prior IMAX experiences, no bratty kids, cell phones, laser pointers, etc, a well behaved audience. The film did not seem to be 2 1/2 hours long, it really did breeze by. Gonna order the book. Two big thumbs up.

stickman428I FINALLY got to go see this movie with my wife today. I loved it.
I think this movie is beautiful because of the focus it has on friendship and sacrifice and yes there is a
VERY dark twist I didn’t see coming but that only makes the story more interesting. It really blind sides you.
This is the best movie I have seen since the sequel to Top Gun.
This movie was fun. It’s nice to have fun again at the theatre and to truly escape reality and enjoy a good story.
