Sigmund"Volcanic Activity Lifts Sunken WWII Ghost Ships From the Ocean Off Iwo Jima"
"The Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire is one of the most seismically unstable regions in the world. Dotted with towering volcanoes and consistently troubled by earthquakes, it's also the birthplace of an abundance of new islands—some temporary, others permanent—rising up out of the waves and continuing to grow. One such place is Iwo Jima, a spit of land south of Japan famous for the raging battle fought there between American and Japanese forces in 1945.
The war, of course, is very much over. But plate tectonics never stop. This month, a recent burst of seismic activity on the island, now known as Iō Tō in Japan, has lifted numerous WWII shipwrecks from the ocean, leaving them littered across a new black sand beach like ruins from Planet of the Apes. Three-quarters of a century after the fighting ceased, ghosts of the conflict that defined the modern world are still emerging from the blue waters of the Pacific..."Complete article with photos:

OrgussThat second paragraph makes it sound like the hulks have suddenly sprung from the depths when it's really been over a decade since they became readily visible.

Yes. I was sort of picturing the B17 scene from Heavy Metal…..only with ships and a zombie Japanese crew.

PrefontaineAnyone brings Iwo Jima up I think of my Grandad, RIP. He was a P51 mechanic for the Army Air Force. They flew escort for the B29's. I have a black and white photo of him standing on one of the wings with his issued cap, in a t-shirt. He would always tell me about a monkey his team found, that they made peace with and took on as the crew's pet. He was very gentle with animals and wanted to bring it back home as a pet and they forbid it. The man was so patient. He wouldn't let me mow his yard as a kid on his riding lawn mower but he'd raise up the deck and let me ride it as long as I want. He had pecan trees, he would sit in his chair, patiently and a few squirrels would eat right out of his hand.
When he got back he went to work for Bell helicopter and worked there until he retired. He carried a lunch pail and a thermos every day for his entire career.
