Yeah, that M14 video guy... |
Looking into building an AR pistol for a truck gun. Any recommendations? I want something reputable and reliable. Barrel length recommendation? Maybe 5.55 or 9mm? Tony. Owner, TonyBen, LLC, Type-07 FFL www.tonybenm14.com (Site under construction). e-mail: tonyben@tonybenm14.com

I carry an AR9 in a backpack that's in the seat next to me these days. If I did it again I would use the CMMG RDB kit instead. But this one works well and I'm in the process of getting an 11.5" 5.56 upper for it. I'm using a Vltor A5H4 buffer, Rifle spring and carbine tube now. I have an AR10 buffer tube that's the same length as the Vltor A5 one. I can set up the lower with the A5 system using the A5H4 buffer and Rifle spring for both. When using the 9mm upper all that would have to change is adding a 5/8" spacer. The extra 5/8" on the tube is nice to have for pistol builds too. But I may need to put a LOP limiter on the brace as it's already 13.5" with the law folder and carbine tube.

I've built a lot of different solutions for this and sort of pick depending on what packaging is needed and where I'm headed. In 5.56 10.5-11" is the shortest I'm comfortable with and using the LAW folder you get a decent package. I have soft sided case that this fits in nicely, but its not as ubiquitous as a backpack but in a normal everyday crowd its not noticed if I carry it. This is what I normally take with me, but I wouldn't leave it in the truck normally since it doesn't hide well there even in a F350 CC. Other 5.56 platforms without the need of a buffer tube are a bit smaller but the ones I have are also more expensive so I don't normally use them. In pistol calibers an AR is not my first choice as even though you can get silly short barrels (I find below 5" or so I don't have enough handguard) you still have the buffer tube or to use the folder. I have a CMMG banshee and it will easily fit in a normal backpack compartment and I'll sometimes use that. But when I want to have something that's truly easy to conceal I use a non ar pistol caliber platform and with a folding or sliding brace you can get a package that's exceedingly short. Those will actually fit in my center console in a soft case which is a huge advantage. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

i would go 5.56 in a 10.5 or 11.5 or maybe 12.5". I would go with a complete lower PSA with their enhanced trigger. A great deal. Then shop for a quality upper. They are still out there. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

You can piece all the parts together yourself, and often get a better package. But the PSA kits are very solid. A 10.5" barrel with a LAW folding adapter makes a great backpack setup. -------------------------------------------- Floridian by birth, Seminole by the grace of God

I have an Aero Precision 10.5" AR pistol (Upper built by Aero, I built the lower on a stripped Aero myself). Functions great, no issues with any ammo I've used yet. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Yep, I saw the daily deal in my email. Also, not pictured above is the Romeo5 I also picked up. https://palmettostatearmory.co...ht-black-r52001.html

Yeah, that kit was already sold out. I got this one... https://palmettostatearmory.co...link-pistol-kit.html Ended up being $497, shipped. I've got two PSA lowers that are listed as "receivers" so I can make these pistol builds from the start. I've got a high quality carry handle for it until I can get an optic. Tony.
