I need to mount a scope on a flat top AR; 30mm tube, 50mm objective.

What should I use for rings, or dedicated mount, if that's a better plan?

I've only ever put red dots on AR's, so I don't know what I need for height/clearance, or what's the standard system to use.

Thanks.

A

Single piece scope mount, especially if you don't have a monolithic upper (ie, if your rail is separate from your upper, it is preferable to mount the scope to the upper only, not partially on the upper and the rail - which is what you'll likely have to do with individual rings for proper eye relief).

I use Geissele, American Defense, and Addland Engineering 1-piece mounts on my primary rifles (I have 2 Burris mounts on 22LR ARs). Warne makes a good mount as well.

But I had never mounted a 50mm scope on an AR, so I can't speak to what height you might need to work best.

Thanks Rhino. Good point. I don't have a monolithic upper, so that's a consideration.

I have used Larue, ADM, and Warne. I liked them all.

My most recent build I went with a Warne X-Skel with 20 MOA of built in elevation to give me more use of the internal travel in my optic.

They have a nice amount of cantilever for a typical rifle scope, yet still fit within the rail space of a standard flat top, and will accommodate a 50mm objective.

This one happens to be on a monolithic upper, but it would have the same eye relief on a typical M4 upper.

I much favor mounts, and see no reason to use two piece rings on a rifle with a picatinny rail like an AR, SCAR, etc...

I'm not looking to overspend, that said, I'm not adverse to spending if there's value in the purchase.

I have used GG&G, Larue, and Nightforce. All work really well. I feel the Nightforce is the most solid of these mounts. Nightforce isn't a quick release mount -- whether or not that makes a difference to you. I prefer the GG&G over the Larue.

In rifle matches I won mounts from JP and Warne, but I haven't mounted optics with them yet. I feel the JP mount is the better of the two.

The Warne mount is the best value for the money. I think it's plenty solid enough, but it can be purchased for less than most quality one-piece mounts.

I have an Aero Precision mount.
Solid mount, not terribly expensive, no quick release (if that matters to you).

I'm another Aero Precision mount fan...it's a light weight mount but it's strong with it's top ring slip and hook together design....

Also use mostly LaRue mounts. I have 1 Burris, 1 Warne, rest LaRue LT QDs. They just work well for me.

If you don't have a monolithic receiver I'd use a cantilever mount. That would allow you to have the mount completely over the receiver and there would be no problem getting correct eyesight position. I've used most of the mounts mentioned but if you don't want to over spend I'd consider the Burris Cantilever PEPER mount. IRC correctly they are under $100 for the fixed mount. I've used a few of them and never had any problems of any kind. Only down side they are a little on the heavier side.
