I’m curious what the competition was. Other than possibly the lowest backpressure, I can’t see the 556K being the best in any of the categories they listed. There are other cans that are as light and short, but also sound better and have less sparking. Even the backpressure advantage the Hux cans have is being eroded away by some of the latest designs.

If this is a serious inquiry and not your dry/subtle humor, then SAW Tisha. The Ekron is actually quieter in my testing, but it's a 6" can, so it's getting less attention. I generally don't shoot without ear pro, I don't recommend it, and I absolutely wouldn't do it with most rifle suppressors out there, but the Stealth Additive stuff is above and beyond in terms of taming blast and concussion to the shooter.

I asked Grok when this was and what other cans were competing for the contract. The latter isn't public knowledge, but the former was April of '22. At the time, that was an excellent choice. Today? Obviously it has been left in the dust. Five year contract, so they'll probably have something else soon, if not already.

Of course, everyone with an AR pistol or rifle 11.5" has a silencer so they don't puncture the eardrums of everyone in the house.
As you noted, 11.5" unsuppressed is brutal indoors. If you have an 11" rifle, then you've already gone through the NFA process and it's nothing to go ahead and stick a suppressor on it as well. The tax stamp is free, processing times are consistently and shockingly fast now, and there's a whole industry feverishly fighting over "best" and "best value." It's like mufflers on cars: Yes, it should be considered standard equipment. Everything has been shifting that way for some time now and has picked up dramatic momentum over the last year in particular.

I made the mistake of SBRing a 9" barrel Galil Ace 2 and as you noted, it's brutal even with a suppressor indoors. I thought it was a pretty cool gun in that size and caliber, but since I experienced actually shooting it indoors, I've changed to suppressor around and use it exclusively on my SBR'd .300 Blackout caliber PSA Jackal. Even shooting supersonic loads, it's very doable inside.

Dwill104I’ve shot a couple of 11” 5.56 guns indoors, both suppressed and unsuppressed, and don’t find it that bad. That said, 10.5” is as short that I plan to ever go for 5.56.

IndianaBoyMy first suppressor purchase was a durable and relatively inexpensive 5.56 can. I put it on a 16" AR. It made it too heavy and imbalanced. And this is coming from a guy who likes a rifle a little on the heavier side. The balance was more of a problem than the weight.
So eventually I did the SBR process and put it on an 11.5 Now it balances properly but I gave up some velocity.
If I have to fire a rifle inside of a structure, this is the rifle I want.
However, I'm thinking now that a 14.5 with a pinned suppressor adapter to get it to 16 and the lightest 3d printed titanium K can might be the best of both worlds.
I guess since I already have an SBR lower I could add another upper and try it out without worrying about the pin and weld, or even really worrying about the length at all. 12.5, 13.9, etc etc....
If anyone here is considering a rifle can. Make weight one of your primary considerations. A few extra ounces that you would never notice in a scope or a mount make a much bigger difference when you hang it on the end of the barrel.

Were you wearing exceptional ear-pro?
I found every rifle inside to be painful. 11.5 was like absolutely nasty. 11.5 with a can was tolerable but unpleasant.

One of the reasons I really hope the SBR and silencer NFA dies is because we should all be able to have cheap and accessible 13.5 rifles with 4 inch titanium cans. Less ballistic sacrifice, decently quiet.
Grabbing your HD rifle and shooting someone would ideally not result in permanent hearing loss. 16" rifle inside a house is downright painful. Albeit less so than being murdered.
That being said, I fully understand why most people have defaulted to a 16" AR. I have one 4 feet from me right now.

No, just regular Peltor Sport Tactical 500 electronic ear muffs with no secondary ear plugs. My hearing is fine, but to be honest, I usually only shoot a few shots unsuppressed when I get a new gun for an initial function check before I slap the suppressor on it. I’m usually more annoyed by the noise from people shooting in the adjacent stalls than from what I’m doing. Probably go to the indoor range next week to try out a 10.5 JAKL upped that I recently got.

Everything else with barrels under 14.5 would be in a caliber other than 5.56.
Although it lacks the penetration capability and long range usefulness of the 223/5.56, even the 300 Blackout (not to mention other cartridges) delivers the same muzzle energy from a ~9 inch barrel as most 223 loads do from 16 inches. And with a lot less obnoxiousness. If short is sexy and more convenient when checking someone’s bedroom closet, why not do it all right?
But I’m not qualified to render such opinions, so disregard all that.
It would be a mistake to sell yourself short, sigfreund. You are supremely qualified to render such opinions, far more so than most.
I put off buying a .300 blackout for a long time. I finally gave in and purchased a BCM 9" .300 blackout pistol. I wasn't interested in setting the gun up to shoot both subsonic and supersonic ammunition. I run supersonic 110 or 123 grain exclusively. The difference in muzzle blast between my 11.5 5.56 and the 9" .300 BO is dramatic. It has become my goto for home defense.
I would be interested to hear some thoughts as to why the .300 blackout isn't more popular with LE professionals that take their weapons inside regularly. Is it the cost of switching or something else?

CPD SIGJupiter-
IIRC, the .300BO was designed for short barrel and suppressed, and still have enough “umph” to the round to put the “terminal” in terminal ballistics.
Me, personally, I’m hesitant, not willing… to venture out into other calibers. I’m happy with the “common calibers” (for lack of a better term).
.223/5.56, .308/7.62 are fine FOR ME. Let’s face it, there’s a ton of those caliber rounds out there, in volume and easily available.
I’m looking at 6.5 & 6.8, but don’t really have any long range access to really let those rounds do what they are meant to do at serious distance.
But again, THATS ME.
I think, in general, Law Enforcement feels the same. Budget is one thing, bosses willing to listen to their experts is probably another.

Probably that and ammo, but if we could, I'd prefer to keep the topic on 5.56 and barrel length, particularly as it pertains to the FBI ballistician's remarks in the video.

Sorry for the thread drift, P220 Smudge. All the talk about those obnoxious short barreled 5.56 rifles got me carried away.

And it’s multi fold-
We’re not suppressing the pistols to be quieter.
Most of the dudes that routinely shoot people indoors are already running suppressors and earpro.
And of course…..cost and logistics.

No worries! I think it's a conversation worth having, and I think we should, I just don't want to muddle this thread.

Let's talk about muzzle blast inside a room with the 11.5". I had just opened the door to a small rifle range when a guy in the lane directly in front of me let loose with a 10.5 or 11.5" AR with a compensator. I was wearing muffs over plugs, and I am here to tell you that the concussion made me nauseous.
Advantage, 16

Amen. I absolutely hate the SBR ARs at my indoor ranges. They hurt when they are firing. I always try and get as far away from them as possible.

sigspecopsI just back from the range shooting a 10.5in 5.56 and a 10.5in .300. Neither is suppressed and the .300 had a 150 grain supersonic round. The difference in noise and concussion was very noticeable. The .300 produced less of each. If I had to shoot indoors without hearing protection or a suppressor, I’d would definitely reach for the blackout.

I don’t think anyone disputes that subsonic .300 BO is a lot quieter than supersonic 5.56 out of a short barrel.

Where exactly is sigspecops comparing a subsonic .300 BO to a supersonic 5.56?
sigspecops, the thread below would be a good place to share your findings.
