I know the 700 series mags will almost all fit, 7600, etc.

But I’ve heard that any 30 cal mag, 30-06 or otherwise will work in a 308 gun.

Is this accurate? Does anyone know?

Your question is a bit convoluted. The “700” is a bolt gun and the “7600” is a magazine fed auto or pump, I forget which. The 7400 is whatever the 7600 isn’t.
99% of 700s are hinged floorplate or blind magazine units. Magpul and I think others have created polymer stocks tha use proprietary magazines, which wouldn’t work in a stock 7600.
As to the last question, a 308 is 1/4 or 3/8” shorter than a 30-06, as are the magazines. Long action vs short action.

As stated, the 700 is a bolt action with an integral box mag. Most have hinged floorplates, some do not, but they are still fixed within the body of the gun. The 760/7600 is a pump action with a detachable box mag. No interchangeability between those. There may be between the 740/7400, a semi-auto.

Lemme rephrase, the 7x series magazines. Also, action doesn’t matter in the 760 and 7600 as far as I know when it comes to magazines. This is based off internet research so please correct me if I’m wrong.

I ask because I have two, a 308 and a 30-06. Both magazines seem identical in every measurement but are clearly marked differently. I haven’t tried shooting them interchangeably as I don’t want to damage my gun or my brothers gun. So, with all that said, do 7x series magazines for 30 cal cartridges work interchangeably?

The 7600 and 760 are indeed interchangeable according to numerous online posts I have read. Do you have firsthand evidence that this is not accurate?

I ask genuinely because I trust this forum above many others. Not to try and prove you wrong.

I think the 788 mag. is unique to it's self. I know that was not your question J. But it is in the 7xx family, sort of. They are very hard to find too fwiw.

At least on older 760/7600 magazines, the short cartridge (308) mags had a spacer in them to shorten the inside dimensions which the long cartridge (30-06) mags did not. 740/7400 mags have a lever that will release the bolt on an empty mag for the auto loader but would work fine in the pump also.
