The first suppressed AR I fired was also a MK18 that our rental range had at the time. My impression was like having my face in front of a car's exhaust pipe while the person at the wheel revved the engine. Alot of MK18s were built with larger than standard gas ports due to customers complaining that their el-cheapo commie steel cased .223 wouldn't reliably cycle the action, but as others have said, many DI ARs are typically over-gassed.

That is a better explanation of what it smelled/felt like.

Did it smell like amonnia? Some ammo is worse than others. I shot some old (from the 1990s) PMC .223 ammunition through my AR with a suppressor and it was hard to stomach. Federal M193 5.56 ammo is much easier on the nose.

The DD M18 is over gassed. As has been mentioned, DD opened up the gas port on the civilian version for better reliability. My BCM 11.5 with a Dead Air Sandman has very little gas to the face.

Sounds like it might be Remington ammo.

I can't think of any Remington ammunition that I've shot over the years that wasn't either dirty or smokey.

I must be weird...I kinda like that sort of stink.
A little gas to the face...meh, just another day of freedom. Adjustable gas blocks are really becoming the other must have for your AR. I like the Superlative Arms bleed off gas block, working fine for my 300 BLK and 5.56 pistols.

As others have said, the MK18s that DD sells on the civilian market are (or at least were) known to be overgassed so they would run with anything from hot duty or serious practice loads down to powder puff Tula or Wolf. All I run in my ARs for practice is various M193 (indoor range I use doesn't allow M855.)

I get a little bit of gas out of my 11.5 BCM, but only one friend of mine notices it. She's highly sensitive to such things - and highly recoil-sensitive as well, though. Perhaps try the Gemtech adjustable bolt carrier.

Yes, ammonia in large part. In rethinking it, it may have been particularly bad as I was running it on full auto so quite a bit of gas at once. It was a DD suppressor but I don't know what model.

That’s the perfect setup for the Gemtech SBC in my opinion.

Picture of me shooting it for the first time. I didn’t extend the stock enough so my cheek weld wasn’t great. The next few magazines were at a better cheek weld but that didn’t change anything. Over gassing sounds like the problem. For a demo rifle, I imagine DD wanted it to run flawlessly so extra gas was the trade off.

Still a fun day.

I get some ammonia smell out of my reloads but it doesn't bother me at all. I have a 11.5" BCM, Radian skeltonized charging handle using an Omega can, I get some gas to face but like the smell it doesn't bother me.

I have thought about getting a bootleg or gemtech adjustable BCG but haven't really felt it was necessary.
