I hate opening threads like this.

Why did I open this? Now I have a renewed interest in spending my money on a gun that has no practical place in my collection, is expensive to feed, has expensive magazines...and is oh-so-sexy.

There are different ways of suppressing a M14/M1A. Delta-P Design makes thread adapter for both standard barrels and for SOCOM-16 barrels.

Other companies make direct-connect flash suppressors that allow silencers to be used, like the Yankee Hill Phantom flash hider...

When running a silencer, you need to modify the gas system, so as not to over-stress the operating rod. A vented gas piston or a Schuster adjustable gas plug will accomplish this.

You know you need one, probably 2. Spend a few hours today clicking around the M14 forum, search youtube for M14 rifle, google M14 and look at the images, etc. One of my favorites is the beginning of the Nutnfancy video where he kicks that can. For some reason that cracks me up. The rest of it will probably hurt your ears though.

I'm extremely fond of the M14. Always have been. It's outshined by modern offerings performance wise, but who cares. I subscribe to "it's the indian not the arrow" philosophy.

Plus, how much better is it to kick everyone's ass with an M14. You make the news clearing rioters outta your zip code with an M14, you'll have your own cult following. It's a gun that just makes sense to me. Love the wood, no pistol grip, great sights, etc. Just a great "rifle." Looks so cool too. 10 on the cool factor scale.

It's one gun you can probably find during this panic crap too. Most ignorant new gun people don't even know what it is. In fact not long ago I was seeing some great deals on M14 forum. Gotta stay outta that classified section or I get myself in trouble.

When prices aren't crazy shooting surplus 308 isn't that bad. 45 cents a round to 55 cents. Magazines are like 25 bucks. Not a huge deal.

Was out looking for a Scout in wood. Nowhere to be found, shops won't order even if paid in full, so I ended up with a Tanker.

Do these not come with a buttstock cleaning kit? Or is mine lost?
Also - I have factory 10 round mags, and I cannot seem to get them seated with a closed bolt with all 10 rounds loaded. Is that normal? Seats fine with 9 rounds.

Some are tighter than others but generally if the mag is full I'd go bolt open to insert, not out of the ordinary for it to be hard or impossible to seat on a closed bolt. That's one of a few problems you can avoid keeping the mag loaded with 9.

I thought SA guns came with a cleaning kit. The last few M14s I got did not have one.

Did you replace the SA MIM factory hammer with a forged GI one before it breaks?

Shorter barreled M1A's have been know to be harder on the Hammer and the MIM versions have been known to break. Not just mine. Locate a GI hammer while you still can............. DJ

Remember, this is all supposed to be for fun...................

Thanks. I'll look into the hammer.

I fixed the magazine seating issue by slightly removing of a mm or so of metal from the 2 follower legs, allowing the rounds to depress a tad bit more for lock engagement. Probably not the ideal way, but it worked.
