Picked it up this week. Pretty cool and rare but heavy! Might eventually rotate it out of the collection in favor of a Galil pistol in this caliber but glad to have come across it.

Have an 11" Galil .308 pistol. The shorty .308's are a blast!

Yeah, the P716 is so heavy I’m going to sell it and get a Gen 2 Galil Ace pistol in 7.62x51 and get a short suppressor for it to take the edge off. It’ll be my first can.

The Sig feels like every bit of 10 lbs.

Seems the Galil Ace Gen2 .308 pistol weighs around 7.5 pounds. Not a huge difference. The 716 is a nicer, more svelte (despite its weight), more collectible rifle, IMO. We have a thread about the HK 416 "lineage", of which the Sig 516 is a part. The 517 is therefore related to the HK 417. If you got into that gun for a good deal, you may want to reconsider offloading it for a current production IWI product.

Also, the Gen2 ACE is, IMO, the less desirable of those guns. The Gen1 has the rad integrated sights and sleeker handguard. If you're not going to mount anything more than a light, the MLOK guard is irrelevant and chunky. Also to be considered is the fact that the ACE Gen2 weight is measured without sights and with a newer (lighter) brace than the one your 716 is wearing. Also, a carbon handguard (admittedly not cheap) from Lancer can be had for the 716, which would shed some weight.

I think the 716 is the better gun. Obviously there's some subjectivity there. And I absolutely sympathize with those who are afflicted with gun ADD. I have comfortably arrived at the conclusion that AR platform = best platform, when it comes to pragmatic/practical rifles though. That I can say with objectivity.

Also, I am a recovering 55X fanboy. The 55X was doing Galil ACE stuff better than the Galil ACE, before the ACE was around. The AR15/10 is just better than the 55X. As much as I want(ed) the 55X to be "better", there's no denying the AR supremacy. Yes, I know the 55X is prohibitively expensive, when compared to the ACE, and the price can justifiably be leveraged against it. However the AR15/10 is cheaper and better than both the 55X and ACE.

If you're looking at these options from a pragmatic standpoint, the AR(716 or DI) wins; from a collectability standpoint, the 716 wins. If you want an ACE, get an ACE. I suggest holding onto the 716 in either case though, if your wallet can handle it.

Good points. I scored the unfired P716 for a great deal. They’re typically around $1,499+ used on GB with used gen 1 Galil 7.62x51 pistols going for $1,699+. I haven’t seen any Gen 2 Galil pistols in 7.62 NATO sell used but you can get them new for $1,799. All of the currently listed Gen 1 Galil pistols in 7.62x51 are way overpriced.

I started researching some owner testimonials on the piston 716s and they didn’t sound as reliable as I suspect the Galil will be. I’ve owned a few variations of the first and second generation and they were all over built like tanks.

I’ll weigh the Galil when it gets here but it’s listed as 6.5 lbs without sights. So 2.5 lbs less than the P716 as configured. If I’d kept the P716, I would swap the brace and receiver extension to something newer and lighter. But I took it to my dealer to sell today.

The 7.62x51 Galil Ace Gen 2 pistol is 1 lb 5 ounces lighter (but doesn’t have sights).

Well, if weight is the priority, then the choice is clear.

Likely because there's others like me, that think the Gen1 is the cool, collectible one.

Yeah, I like the aesthetic on it too but a couple of gen 1s have recently gone for around $1699 and they are asking $2,000-$3,000+ for the ones on there now.

I went full spacetard on the Galil Ace. Might cut the front of this carry handle down to give space for BUIS.

You just reminded me that I've still got the shorty 716 upper around here someplace. I let the rifle go a few years back with the 16" upper on it and kept the shorty upper for reasons unknown.

They are heavy sticks for sure.
