I’ve read that you can use Swedish Mauser (7mm?) clips instead of the real 03-A3 clips, the Mauser ones are supposed to be superior. True, false?

Quite true. Swedish Mauser (6.5x55mm) stripper clips work great in M1903s and M1917s. They're what I use with mine, though I most often just thumb the rounds in one after another.

In fact, they're better than actual M1903 clips. M1903 clips retain the cartridges using flimsy little tabs on each end that tend to break off after a few reuses, since they were designed to be single-use disposable items. Here's a photo of some M1903 clips - note the flimsy tabs on either end:


Whereas Swedish Mauser clips - like other standard Mauser clips - use a robust leaf spring along the spine of the clip to put tension against the rim and retain the cartridges, which won't wear out even after many reuses.

I use Swedish clips in mine. Note that there are no retention tabs on the top or bottom on the Swedish ones, so if you handle your loaded clips roughly or they rattle around in a pocket or go bag you might lose a round off the top or bottom. Not really an issue unless you’re running and gunning.
