Red Dot Sights
I have an S&W M&P 15 AR that I've actually never shot. It's been sitting in my safe for, well, let's just say awhile because I just never got around to it.

Now, I actually want to use it.

Assuming I had $500 I could spend, what Red Dot would you get? I had my heart set on an Aimpoint Comp M4, but those are just to much money.

Thanks!

Give Holosun a good look. They are known for good quality & the prices are reasonable.

Holosun is ok if you like Chinesium.

For $500, the answer is Aimpoint Pro all day long.

Another vote for the Aimpoint Pro. I've got one, and several other aimpoints. It's a durable and reliable optic based on proven technology.

Another vote for the Aimpoint Pro. I have them on 2 of my rifles.

Did anyone mention the Aimpoint PRO? Wink

That would be my choice.

May I tag on to this thread?

I understand the love for the Aimpoint PRO, no doubt. Last weekend, however, I used a Vortex Spitfire and the thing I really liked about it was the "ring around the dot." Like this:

In my limited experience, the ring made things WAY easier than just a dot.

I'd like to have another of that Vortex unit, but it's evidently been discontinued. So far, I'm unable to find something like that in the Aimpoint lineup. Are there recommendations you guys would make?

(I apologize for drifting your thread, 380Swift.)

Among others I have two Aimpoint PRO’s. I would buy this over a Vortex all day. Get a lightweight QD mount instead of the heavy mount that comes with it. Enjoy.

Personally I prefer the Trijicon MRO. I bought mine after trading back in an Eotech EXPS2-0 and have been very pleased with the MRO. I’ve swapped the battery once and it’s on all the time. Heck I was able to make hits yesterday at 275 with my 300 BLK SBR while using it.

Both the Aimpoint PRO and the MRO excellent red dots. I prefer the MRO mainly due to the smaller overall size and weight and the large field of view. I believe the MRO is made in the USA. You can’t go wrong with either.

Where can I purchase an MRO for ≤$500?

One of the 1st google results is Larue, on sale for $440 with mount.

As mentioned, Larue has it for $440 with their QD mount.

Sheel’s also has it (no mount) for $449.

That looks really interesting, I'm going to check that out as well because I do like that sight picture.

Another question, since I don't have a fully railed upper and I have the standard AR-15 front sight post, do I need any special mounting to get the sight to co-witness properly with the front iron?

I'm certainly not an expert, but I'll offer this:
My rifle has the standard front sight, and once I added that Vortex unit to the rail and used it for a few minutes, I never thought another thing about the iron front sight. It became easy to not even see it.

Before going with a MRO shot friends AR's with the Aimpoint Pro and MRO. I went with the MRO for the reason 06wrb mentioned, larger field of view. Not a small difference.

I don't like the fish eye of the MRO, I much prefer the Aimpoint PRO.

I tried an MRO for a couple years, eventually sold it - not horrible or anything but the prices are creeping up and I prefer Aimpoint Micros and Pros.

I don't think there is anything really wrong with MROs, but I think you get more with the Aimpoint Pro as it comes with lens covers which you'll have to buy for an MRO.

.

New production MROs (after SN 89k) don’t have this issue anymore.

I have two MROs (one red, one green) as well as several different Aimpoints. Both are great, MRO being smaller than the Pro for about the same $, and being US produced. Not a huge detraction from the Pro mind you.

What I do like though is the spare battery compartment on the LaRue Pro mount. Between the onboard battery and the spare now you’re talking about 60k+ hours of life.
