I have an Aimpoint ML2 red dot and also am thinking of using a 1-6x24 scope. Both seem too low for a comfortable and natural check weld. What gives? Do I need an extra high mount or rings?

Do you have a front sight base you need to clear?

I do, but currently I can see it but it is low in the sight pix. So not currently an issue. But When I look through the scope or site I only can see the top 1/3 of the circle.

The proper sized mount is the one that works for you.
Lower mounts don't work well for me. Same issue, I wind up looking through the top portion instead of the middle of the tube unless I kink my neck way over, which is uncomfortable and not natural.

I tried a YHM riser first to see if that worked better before buying another mount to try out.

This. Depends on the optic, the stock, your own body mechanics and how the gun fits you.

I use a 1.5" across the board on all AR10/15. This was the standard for many years, but several higher heights are being made now. Just ordered a Leupold base to replace this Aero Precision, but I still went with 1.5" height.

Best advice is try some of the others and see what works for you. I've never wanted any higher.

Mine is set up very similar to yours as best I can tell and it is too low.

What I have have is a UTG AIR31850D and I do not know what height it is exactly. But I need something a bit higher for sure.

I think I will talk with my Gunsmith as he has lots of rings and can probably get me set up.

I like 1.93 height for LPVOs and red dots, I like my head up slightly more. There was a little learning curve going from 1/3 to the 1.93 but I feel it’s so much better for me.

1.5 mounts are ideal for me.

It may not matter to the accuracy being sought with most AR type rifles, but for most precise results I have become a firm believer in minimum downward stock weld (cheek) pressure. After accepting that advice from precision shooters, my own accuracy results have become much more consistent.

With that in mind so that it’s not necessary to jam one’s cheek down onto the stock, my magnifying optics are mounted on ARs so that the center of the scope is 1.5 inch above the top of the Picatinny rail base. That allows comfortable and yet positive contact between my cheekbone and the stock but without any unnatural downward pressure.

I’ve seen at least one YouTuber’s advice that nonmagnifying sights be mounted a bit higher so the head can be kept in a relaxed fully upright position. That’s how I have my Aimpoint sights mounted, with their centers 1.8 inch above the top of the Pic rail. That can result in more of a jawbone stock weld that may not be best for precision shooting, but yet can be fine for how many (most?) ARs are used—and which is true of me.

My groups tightened up quite a bit going to taller mounts and being able to get a consistent cheekweld. Both red dot and scope.
My right earpro doesn't get moved out of the way now either, which used to drive me nutz.
I'd see other people using muffs and not have that issue and wasn't until I got taller mounts that I realized that I'm stretched out a bit more than they are.

I had a Luth stock for awhile but don't need a cheek riser and it's kinda meh anyway.
So I just used an A2 stock.

1.93" Midwest Industries QD mount.


I have a Romeo5 XDR on it at the moment and use an ADM QD mount. The T2 low mount.
That gives a 1.6" centerline.
I used the 1/3 cowitness spacer that came with the R5 and it now sits 1.8" above the rail.

I've considered picking up a riser just to see what all the fuss is about.

No way I would spend $200+ for a new mount just to try one.

If you are unhappy with your sight pix I would definitely do it. For me at least, it allows for a natural check weld and excellent sight pix through the scope now.
