myrottietyA Short Action for $1,300?!
I don't know a ton about precision rifles. But is this normal? I just got a email from Falkor Defense... Advertising a short action for $1,299!!
Is this normal for this kind of thing?

fritzUncertain what you mean by "is this normal" -- maybe pricing. Prices vary by brand and model. I suppose Falkor's listed price is near the middle ground for quality actions.

this,
I do transfers for a friend that shoots PRS small bore and builds a few Centerfire guns (as well as shoot them)
last transfer was a Terminius Titan, and I wanna say it was a bit more than that, but honestly I don't remember (I did not have to pay for it, just receive and dispose)
years ago when Precision Shooting and Accurate Rifle was still published, I recall some Nesika Bay(?) , Stolle (?) and other actions costing quite a bit of cash,

fritzAction prices have increased noticeably in the past couple of years. The website Bugholes has a number of models -- from around $900 to $1700. My preferred Defiance actions are now even more expensive.

Hamden106How is this better than a blueprinted 722 or 700SA?

myrottietyI know Zero... Zilch... about this space. Just seemed super high for what I perceive to be a bolt and a receiver.
But going back and looking they seem super proud of their AR platform rifles as well.

PGTAero sells their Solus action for $899 or $1149 as a barreled action.
Even the once affordable $299 Howa barreled action is up to nearly $500 these days. But the Grandpa-in-Chief tells us 8.3% inflation isn't anything to worry about because it was only 8.2% last quarter.

The custom actions are built with closer tolerances and better steel than the Remington actions. For someone wanting great accuracy on a lower volume rifle, the blueprinted Remy will work just fine -- and for a lower cost.
The custom actions shine for folks who shoot enough to burn up a barrel or two per year. These actions will stay true longer, will cycle more smoothly, and will produce more consistent accuracy throughout their life. I know guys who have 15-20 rebarrels on actions -- the rifles still shoot well and the actions are still going strong.

Unfortunately, the prices are what the market will bear.
My most accurate AR15 has an SI Defense receiver set and a Krieger barrel. Falkor Defense is the current name for SI Defense. I've shot a couple of Falkor Defense AR10s in Competition Dynamics steel matches. Falkor promoted the stages and all competitors had to shoot the course of fire on Falkor's rifles. Falkor's rifles were very accurate and they felt nice to shoot.

benny6LRB stripped M14 receivers start at $1020. That's with no bolt or anything.
At least you get a blueprinted receiver and bolt with a Falkor.

VoshterkoffEven the Origin that I bought for $750 is $1,000 now. Might be worth looking at a Tikka and upgrading the barrel after you shoot it out.

jhe888It is like anything. There is a wide range. But for a small, quality shop, this isn't out of the range by any means.

maladatAs a class, the high-end actions are made in smaller production batches with more expensive materials, more expensive machining methods, and more complex, more expensive to manufacture designs than a standard factory action.
One obvious example that shows up a lot is the recoil lug (the vertical tab that sticks down from the front of the action).
A factory Remington 700 action is made from a piece of round bar the same size as the action, they basically just machine the inside parts out. The recoil lug is a separate piece of metal.
Making an action with an integral (all one piece with the action body) recoil lug means you have to start with a big block of metal and cut the entire action out of it. It's a lot more machine work.
Some of the expensive details on the fancy actions are purely cosmetic. Others are, at least theoretically, functional improvements.
How much functional improvement actually results from each detail and whether the amount of improvement is worth the price tag is a constant topic of debate.

I rebarreled a stainless Tikka CTR but they are also going for ~$300 more than 3-4 years ago.
I have the KRG Midas trigger, but there are a lot of great options for the Remington platform and with that savage barrel nut they are snap to swap barrels. The Tikka is also torqued on like a mo fo.

KskeltonMy buddy just had a pierce engineering action transferred in and if I recall it was 1300-1400…. Something like that…
I guess it’s normal’ish for quality actions

djpaintlesWhy is divorce so expensive? Because they are worth it!
So is the right action. No matter how much you spend putting lipstick on a pig 700 action it will never have the same quality steel and overall tolerances as a quality custom action.
FORTUNATELY you can true up a crappy cast handled 700 action with a good barrel and it will shoot great until the bolt handle falls off, the extraction cam peens off into soft metal or the like but it will never be as quality a rifle as a full quality custom actioned rifle……
Remember, this is all supposed to be for fun...................

I plan on wiping the lipstick off my R700 5R in a AICS/Timney/S&B and upgrade it to a new quality action/barrel sooner than later.
But I know what you mean even though it shoots pretty dang good now.

I purchased my two nitrided Deviants from Bugholes. You peaked my curiosity so I had to check for myself. I can't believe how much the cost has gone up.

Yep, the prices aren't much fun. I have ordered 3 actions directly from Defiance over the years. IIRC 2 are DLC and 1 is Black Nitride coated. I believe they are Rebels, with some customization. Great actions.
