I recently purchased a Sig Sauer Ar rifle and trying to figure out what model it is.The only thing on the rifle is AR556 and the serial number starts with JT011***.It has never been fired and looks to be a stock rifle with a folding stock. It is a piston style and I paid 700.00.Can anyone tell me more about the rifle such as date of manufacture and anything else I need to know.Did I overpay or get a good deal? Thanks,Hank.

Pictures of the rifle would likely help.
You state folding stock, so it's VERY likely not an AR.

Does it look like this?

Or maybe this?

Edit: ok my first image link has apparently failed horribly.
Oh well.

Is this a Sig 516, the piston AR rifle? Or the Sig 556 which is an Americanized Swiss 551. 700 for either would be a good price for a new one, even if it is the most basic variant of either. Only complaint for both is they are both no longer being made, and since both are proprietary systems parts may be hard to come by a few decades down the road when the gun needs parts.

Is very likely not a 516 due to mention of a folding stock (although aftermarket parts are of course possible).

The 556/551 variant is the most likely IMO.

I believe serial numbers starting with JT are for SiG 556s.

JTs are the original 556s, not the Xi and not the 551A1.

I would kill to find a Sig556 for under $1000. There was one in my local classifieds not long ago but it was a DMR version with an AR style stock and all I really want is the classic look. There was also a 556xi in my local classifieds for $1200 I tried to buy, but the guy wouldn't sell it to me because even though he was a cop, he didn't want to sell to a military member stationed in the state with their home state ID...despite everyone and their Mom knowing that is entirely legal.

Just checked my 556 Gen 1. It has a JS004xxx serial number.

I have had a few 556 piston guns with JT00xxx or JT010xxx. They made quite a few versions of fixed stocks and the side folders, reused model numbers, and mixed up the nuanced differences. Ex Classic Swat was first with foregrip and light, later with side folder and ACC-type flash hider. I'd like to bitch-slap the marketing team which thought mixing up names, furniture, receiver changes, and reusing model numbers was a good idea.

Not everyone is looking for these piston guns, but I'd say $700 for a side folder is a bargain.
