Building my handy dandy, all around, home defense, keep it near me AR and I start to think about how loud its going to be in the house, in the car... Do you keep a can on your house AR/ handy carbine? Especially a SBR? I know. I know. If you have to use your AR, the last thing you should be worrying about is your hearing. However, I don’t want to disorient myself and I don’t want to deafen my family. I also don’t think stopping to put on electronic muffs is going to happen. Yes, 11.5" BCM SBR with Saker-K is primary house / property AR-15. At times it has been a SBR SCAR 16 with a AAC Suppressor as well. With that being said, my primary HD weapon is my Glock 19, with is attached to my person when I'm not in bed or the shower.

Yes. Dead Air Sandman k. Although if you want to justify not having one for home defense, John Lovell can help. :-) https://youtu.be/mJCg9CCAJyI Posted from my iPhone.

I hate the extra length in the house. I keep a pair of amplifying muffs directly attached to the gun and put those on when I grab the gun. In my house they are a huge advantage in tracking sounds and activity. So that's my strategy. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

I watched the video. Stupid shit. I want the 'unleashing of hell' to be the bad guys leaking vital fluids. Not my ears bleeding. His argument about disincentivazion is wrong.

My HK P30 is always nearby when at home, but I have an 11.5" SBR with a shortened Rugged Surge available inside it's case. Sig P229R 9mm - Sig P365 NRA Sig P320C 9mm - Sig P320 FS .40

No direct experience with that, but I can’t imagine it helping much inside. You have a wall just a few feet away reflecting the sound back at you and it’s trapped in a box. Shooting Pro Steel matches, I’ve popped off a few rounds in close confines (no roof but close walls) with ear protection on. It’s just loud. I’ve shot with a suppressor under the same conditions and I still preferred some ear plugs. BTW: the above was with a 9mm carbine and subsonic 147gr ammo. I can imagine 5.56 being horrifically worse.

Who else? |
I also keep a set of electronic hearing protection handy. I also have a set hanging on my shoulder bag I toss in the back when I roll. They are quick to put on and amplify my hearing offering improved situational awareness. Don't need the added length of a suppressor indoors. Electronic hearing protection is also a non-factor should a trial ensue. If you have time to grab your AR, you have time to put on hearing protection. If you don't, then it's your handgun for the win.

Yes. 10” SCAR 16S SBR with a Saker K on it, for all the reasons you have mentioned. It will still be extremely loud even with the can, but the can will help to decrease immediate disorientation and permanent hearing damage for myself and my family members. I’d like every opportunity to hear what the heck is going on in my house, especially when the police arrive and begin yelling commands.

This is the exact reason why I recommend a pure stock AR-15 9mm Carbine. It is manageable, muzzle blast is minimal, recoil is nonexistent, accurate enough out to 50 yards even under stress, easy to use by children and small statured adults, and readily available ammunition. Now let's do some what-ifs. If you are involved with a fully justified shooting, what do you think will happen to the weapon you used? It will be confiscated by the po-po. You may get it back, eventually. I did when I used the ar for HD, I figured I’d take the can off before the cops took it as evidence....but we moved into the city and I have reverted back to the 12ga with #4 buck, I don’t want to over penetrate the bad guy and hurt my neighbors... Plus I’ve seen very few humans who survive one round of buckshot, but I’ve seen plenty who lived with 223 injuries. I have a krink style one on a 7.5" 5.56 pistol upper and in may direct the noise forward but it's still damned loud. I was at an outdoor range and guys 15' away were cringing. So up until recently my HD gun was a 11.5" sbr with an AAC 762. But going forward it will be a 8.5" 300blk with the same suppressor. Much shorter and quieter

"The average cost of one digital hearing aid can range from $1,000 to $4,000. The cheapest hearing aids cost between $1,500 to $3,000. Midrange hearing aids cost from $3,000 to $4,500. Premium hearing aids fall in the range of $4,500 to $6,000 per device." https://www.consumeraffairs.co...aring-aid-cost.html# Arguments against suppressors on AR home defense weapons because of dollar loss due to impoundment seems moot or mute, or something. It just doesn't sound convincing. Yep, they're definitely falling on deaf ears. ____________________
