Got a PVS-14 headed my way and want some input. Tired old T1 vs EXPS3-0 argument, but with specifics. I have an astigmatism, so the aimpoint looks a tiny bit blurred, is this exaggerated with NV? Do you find the standard 1/3 cowitness of the eotech useable? I have Unity fast mounts for the aimpoint. I’ve got weight, battery life, height on the T1. But I also hate the reticle and love the larger FOV on the Eotech. I’m thinking of just buying both and selling the one I don’t like. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

If that's an option, that's the best thing to do. I am a fan of passive aiming. It's discussed thoroughly in the night vision and thermal thread. The Eotech is the best for the job. The light transmission is better, and the quick back-and-forth between day and night settings is slick. The high (higher than 1/3) mount is mandatory, IMO, to realize the full potential of passive aiming. All that being said, a laser is also essential, to realize the potential of NV in general. There are times when it's too dark for passive, and passive plus IR illum doesn't really work out (reticle is washed out), and kind of defeats a primary purpose (low signature) of passive anyway. I think Smudge can address your astigmatism question.

#1 on the EoTech. It isn’t even in the same zip code as any of the others. As far as the Unity mount goes, it just makes things easier. I’m used to 31’s so I’d imagine that lining a single tube up might be harder, especially with a lower mount. But, regardless, congrats on the 14. I place a higher value on NV capability than I did 10 years ago. On a related note, our L3 rep says that Eotechs new MAWL/DBAL/ AIPTAL called the OGL will hit the streets shortly with an individual LE/mil street price 800-1000 cheaper than a NGAL. https://www.eotechinc.com/eotech-ogl Supposedly, the SOF “big kids” have been running it for a while now and it’s the next big thing.

I replied to Otto's email, but I think it's worth posting here that although I have reasonably bad astigmatism (to the point where I don't see a dot, but a starry banana type shape), looking at the same dot through night vision cleans this up a lot. You're still looking at an analog image on a screen. I would like something that works great under NV and also looks pretty clean without it, so I'm going to try an Eotech when I can. I tried a microprism and didn't take into account the diopter differences and it's at least a full three or four turns from fully blurry to crisp and clear, and then with my natural vision, the reticle is too blurry to shoot with. So, Eotech or go home. And yes, at least a 1/3rd height for passive shooting. I want to try some of the higher mounts, I know there's a variety. I can get right down on an absolute cowitness dot I have on my Scorpion, but it is super uncomfortable.
It was supposed to be $2,199 until a few months ago. Two years ago, they were saying the civ version was going to be $1,299. They've been dangling the market with it for a while now. I wouldn't be shocked if it's the same price as the MAWL when it actually hits the market, or maybe $3,700 which would place it between that and the NGAL. ______________________________________________ “There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”

Passive aiming with NODS, the EOTECH EXPS will win every time. As someone with an astigmatism, I never experienced it being worse under NODS.
