And I liked it!

I bought this rifle from a friend a few years ago, and hadn’t done anything more with it than putting it into the safe since. Today was a beautiful fall day, and another friend allowed me to go shoot at his rural property. I should have taken pics of the rifle while I was out there.

This No. 1 is in .270, and appears to have been taken care of very well prior to my getting it.

I only put seven rounds through it, from roughly 35 and 65 yards. All seven were within an inch and a half from center (a few were much closer), and I don’t feel too bad about that.

In a couple of weeks, if a deer and I can both hold still for a moment at the same time, I think there will be new meat in the freezer.

For the record, I shot this No. 1 far better than the SP101 I took with me!

Long ago I had one in 47-70. It was a good shooter. Someone wanted it for a few more than I paid for it and I let it go. I should not have done that

My Ruger #1 in .30-06 harvested 16 deer with 17 shots (I missed once) before my son wanted it. He now owns it.
It is a classic.
Carried 2 extra rounds on inside left wrist secured by a tennis wrist sweat band. That was my "speed loader".

I have the No. 1A in 30-06. Beautiful and solidly built rifle. Bought it from a coworker after her husband passed about 20 years ago. Not as accurate as my other bolt action rifles but it will do its job.

I looked at one a few years ago, gunshow, private seller. It was in 270, I think he bottomed out at $750. Yeah, the price was ok, if it had been something like 284 Winchester or 45-70, likely would have bought it.

I have way too many ‘deer rifles’, use the same one all the time anyway.

That was one of my thoughts yesterday: “The first shot had better count, because reloading doesn’t happen quickly!"

I put an elastic cuff on the stock that holds 5 or 6 rounds.

Aesthetically no rifle has ever appealed to me more than the Ruger No. 1, and I was taken with the “one shot, one kill” philosophy long before I heard it applied to military sniping.

My first one was in 257 Roberts and later that went in partial trade for a 200 year in 270 Winchester. The second had some of the nicest wood I’ve ever seen on a rifle in person. I always felt it was too bad that the guns never had a reputation for particularly good precision (accuracy). As I recall my 270 was a ~2 MOA gun, and I never did much with it over the years. My local rod & gun club was happy to have it donated to them to offer as a fund-raising raffle prize, though.

I had a Number 3 (the Number 1s cheaper version) in .223 that shot like a dream. Supposedly, the secret to No. 1/3 accuracy is a properly fitted forearm and its mount to the barrel. I would guess tuning that system might be a lost art!

What does it have for sights?

After 36 years I finally figured out a load combo my .243 International really likes. Adding a Jard trigger didn't hurt either.

Also have them in .475 Linebaugh, .450/400, .25-06 and .510 Whisper.

Mine? It's got a Tasco of some sort sitting on top of it, from its previous owner. Not the best, but not horrible either.

I’ve got one in .25-06 and it is my favorite rifle. It is finicky though. With Winchester factory 120gr. PSP loads I can shoot 3 round groups that can be covered with a dime. Buddy of mine moved overseas and gave me a cas of Remington 90gr. factory loads, it shot a 9” pattern. Handloads I’ve been able to dial into about an inch. Love it classic looks, heavy rifle in a light recoiling cartridge that doesn’t beat me up on the bench.

I have wanted a #1 ever since they first became available. For several reasons, I just keep putting off buying one. Now I don't shoot rifles anymore.......but still want one!

I've owned several over the years from 22-250 up to 45-70. They're fun rifles for sure. Currently I don't have any but have a Ruger No. 3 in 375 Winchester. It's an equally fun gun.

I had a "Light Sporter" (22-inch barrel with the forward sling attachment on the barrel) in .30-06 for a time. Pretty to be sure, but it beat me up on the bench.

The neat thing about single-shots like this is that without a reciprocating action, the gun overall is ~4 inches shorter. Put a 22-inch barrel on it and it will look and handle like a carbine. Put a 26-inch on it and it is still no longer than a repeater with a 22", but now imparts more speed to the bullet.

I haven't shot my '76 .270 1-B in a few years. Need to zero it for next deer season. It's a stunner, though.

I'm pretty sure it can be set to simply extract cartridges or fired cases and have them "dribble" into your hand, or eject them forcibly.

yes, the ejector is adjustable. I have mine set to eject about 1 1/2" if the rifle is level.
