Sage modular aluminum chassis stock for Springfield M1A questions.
Here in New York State, semi-auto rifles are heavily regulated. I modified my M1A so I didn't need to "register" it with our state police gestapo. At the time the legislation passed, Springfield didn't offer a New York compliant version and since I already owned my then legal M1A, I chose modifications over registration. I removed the flash hider and the external threading on the barrel muzzle used for the front sight base castle nut. Those are permanent modifications, and a new replacement barrel would bring it back as it originally shipped if it ever becomes possible with Supreme Court wins.
I have the black plastic OEM stock on the rifle and it isn't very solid. Lots of flex in the forward half of the stock. Cheap black plastic. I've been considering a replacement stock for the M1A rifle, and the Sage unit is machined aluminum where the barreled action fits into the stock. No issues with bedding, stock flex, or stock dimensional changes from weather/humidity. Glass bedding is not done when using the Sage aluminum chassis stock.
This Sage stock has a fixed plastic butt stock attached to the rear of the aluminum chassis, so it will remain New York compliant. No protruding AR 15 pistol grip or adjustable stock, also non folding. Does anybody here on the Forum have personal experience with the Sage modular aluminum stock? This particular unit fits Springfield M1A rifles equipped with both GI and medium barrel profiles. (my M1A has a medium profile barrel)
As far as I know, the shotgun stock adapter is not available right now. If you want a chassis with the shotgun stock, you'd have to use a M14.CA chassis with the Magpul SGA adapter.
Anything is a step up from the black plastic stock you have now, but between the M14.CA RS and the Sage ALCS, I've had better groups from the SAGE ALCS. Both chassis will work with your medium barrel.
I have the Sage EBR stock--nice stock but it adds a lot of weight.

^^^ @ benny6,
Here in New York State I don't have a choice. No AR 15 protruding pistol grips or collapsible stocks are allowed. I've got to go with the fixed plastic stock with standard grip profile (non-AR 15 type) when using an aluminum chassis stock system. Any rifle not registered as an assault weapon is MUCH more difficult to confiscate down the road. Could you post some links for what I need if you see this post please?

Then I would consider the Blackfeather chassis with the shotgun stock.
benny6, I was reading the installation instructions for that Blackfeather classis stock (Gen 2) yesterday and it says that I would need to remove the castle nut/flash hider/front sight base for installing the barreled action into the chassis stock. Something about using/installing the Blackfeather supplied guide for the operating rod.
That's going to be a problem for me as the front sight base/flash hider on my M1A is retained onto the splines/muzzle with a pressed on sleeve. (in the same location and instead of the castle nut) It was from removing the castle nut threads on the barrel muzzle to remain New York compliant. (no threaded barrels) Can I install the Blackfeather chassis stock WITHOUT removing the flash hider and also NOT use the supplied Blackfeather operating rod guide? I guess what I am really asking is, can I just install my barreled action as is into the Blackfeather chassis? Thanks!

No, you need to install their op-rod guide block since there's no stock ferrule to keep the stock in place at the front.
I recommend upgrading your barrel to a NY compliant barrel or simply removing the old front sight you have now and using a gas lock front sight from Fulton Armory. It moves the front sight to the gas lock.
What does the Sage chassis stock require? Similar to the Blackfeather Mod 2? Would my "as is" barreled action be a drop-in fit in the Sage chassis stock?

The SAGE is similar to the Blackfeather and uses a bolt-in op-rod guide block as well. Both chassis systems require nearly identical installations. The only difference is that the SAGE uses three screws for the op-rod guide block versus one for the Blackfeather op-rod guide block and the SAGE has a bolt-on top rail with a barrel whip screw.
The Blackfeather op-rod guide block uses one bottom screw and the block height is adjustable and is their version of a "tunable" chassis system. The SAGE uses the barrel whip screw to "tune" the chassis.
The SAGE is not available right now to use a shotgun stock. You're stuck with a pistol grip and a collapsable buttstock.
Your front sight still has to come off for either of them to work.
Your last option is to find an old JAE-100 chassis. it's a straight drop-in option. No mods and no pistol grip and no collapsable buttstock. Expect to pay $1,500 to $2,500 if you can find one.
JAE is now defunct and MDT picked up the patents. But they're only making the JAE-700 for Remington 700 short actions.
When the USCG was going to arm helo operations they chose a robar bolt action rifle, an M243B and the M14T.
The M14T they chose was an already NM rifle (so good shooters) and dropped them into Sage Chassis’s. No change in MOA (but the guns we’re already shooters)
Don’t know how much accuracy you will get out of a regular 4MOA rifle dropped into a sage, but it can’t hurt. This message has been edited. Last edited by: MikeinNC,

Thanks for all the help! I guess I could use a slitting saw and cut the front sight base retention press-on sleeve off the muzzle. Or a cutoff wheel in a Dremel. Then I could use the Fulton Armory gas lock/dovetail/front sight base without a whole lot of effort. Then I have options for using either chassis stock. I appreciate the assistance.
