My first AR was a Rock River. It is fantastic. I bought it a couple of weeks after the Clinton ban ended. It was also what I carried on duty for twenty years. They are solid guns. Solid enough I bought a second RR. They shit the bed politically years ago and that tarnished their brand but thier guns are solid.

Commercial buffer tubes, semi-auto BCG, nothing is staked/pinned/set-screwed, FSB is not "F" height.

I'd go farther and say reputation, quality control, customer feedback and professional endorsements. As a guy who cares about his reputation, I don't endorse $h!t products. I've been given samples of things that were $h!t and I don't endorse them.
I've heard and seen great things about BCM, so I bought their upper and it's my go-to rifle, as of now (16" mid-length, CHF barrel with F-marked sight base and BCM BCG).
Torture tests also carry some weight as well. I don't know about POF these days, but 7 years ago IV8888 did an attempted meltdown of a POF-416 rifle and as far as I know, it's the only rifle that they couldn't break. They fired 2737 rounds in one sitting and the gun was still functional. The barrel was shot out, but it was still functional. Nothing broke or rendered the gun inoperable.
I'd never buy a POF due to parts incompatibility, but that was impressive to me.
I had a Rock River NM 25 years ago, maybe a bit more. It was a wonderfully accurate and reliable rifle.
I had another brand of AR, earlier, that I had Frank White work on and it, too was fantastic.
Never had any problems with either.

I still have my older RRA Predator upper I bought 20-5 years ago in the .223 Wylde chambering, with the Vortex flash hider. I have since added a YHM quad rail about 15-16 years ago, (looks cool but it is much heavier now). Accuracy has been spot on and it will probably outlast me.
