Remington 541 trainer

got2hav1Remington 541 trainer
I picked up this Rem. 541X Target US Property marked training rifle. 22LR. I thought it might be a good shooter and the only time I fired it, I saw some potential. The bad news is the trigger is horrendous! 8-1/2 pounds worth of BAD. I worked on the trigger by thoroughly cleaning out the old grease and crud and trimming the trigger spring and now it breaks cleanly at 4 pounds even. Still not what I am used to but I can live with it. It appears there are no aftermarket triggers for these (only made 8K) I am also in the process of refinishing the stock. It's been a fun project and when I am done, I'll be back with pictures or the "after".

got2hav1The trigger for these is a very simple design and I guarantee you this one is now much cleaner inside and out.

sunburnSome 541’s are prone to bullet jump and won’t shoot.
Lick the lollipop of mediocrity once and you suck forever.

This one shot a 2-1/2" 10 shot group of Tac-22, with sights that don't fit me from 25 yards, so I am optimistic. As soon as my new peep sights get here I'll try again and see how she does.

got2hav1Found a 541S adjustable trigger yesterday for it. This will help a lot with the trigger woes.

got2hav1Stock refinish is coming along. 2-3 more coats of TruOil should do it.

1KPerDayI guess a 4 pound trigger makes sense on a military trainer. Super cool rifle congrats. I have a 582 and it’s one of the prettier “modern” designs ever IMO.

got2hav11K, I get the 4 lbs trigger but when I received this one it had a 8-1/2 pound trigger pull !!!
The rifle doesn't weigh much more than that. It'll be better soon though.

got2hav1Received the new sights from Williams Sight Co. today. Also buffed with 0000 steel wool and added another hand rubbed coat of Tru Oil. Two more to go. Should have the 541S adjustable trigger in a few days.

The orginal sights were Williams. The stock comb was to high, I couldn't get my cheek low enough to see through the aperature. Williams provided a set that are higher front and back.

Thanks. I'm planning to wet sand one more time (1000 grit), then Tru Oil. That will be the last sanding. Then final coat of Tru Oil.

AUTiger89Is that a single shot? It looks like the .22s we used on my rifle team back in the '80s.
We used Vandy's ROTC range and grabbed rifles out of a big cabinet at the range.

got2hav1This one has a 5 round magazine. But yes these were used for training ROTC and others.

got2hav1Update on the 541: I finished the stock and laid the action in there to see how it looked. Not bad, but not perfect. It was my first time using Tru Oil so I'm sure I made some mistakes. You will notice there's no trigger yet. US Post Office has it stuck in Raleigh for the last two days ! Sigh. I'm only an hour away.
