I have a Vortex Viper PST II in an ADM Recon mount that has rotated in the mount and I'm trying to figure out why to try and avoid a repeat of the issue. I had a local shop mount it a while back and I have maybe 200 rounds through the setup (it's mounted on a LaRue AR15 in 5.56) and I can't figure out if it was just incorrectly torqued by the first shop or if I have other issues. I have since remounted it myself following ADMs instructions and torque specs. to the tee, so my question is, besides shooting it and seeing if it repeats itself, are there any other warning signs or causes that I should keep my eyes open for? --------------- "Structural engineering is the art of moulding materials we don't understand into shapes we cannot precisely analyze, so as to withstand forces we cannot really access, in such a way that the community at large has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance." Was it loose when you remounted it? That is the only reason I can possibly imagine for its rotating. Also, if the rings seemed tight, but were not tight enough, perhaps the scope's getting bumped could have rotated it. Plus, are you certain the scope was aligned correctly before you decided it had rotated? I have never used rings that were split vertically, but I seem to remember that there could be issues with keeping the scope aligned correctly when tightening them. Added: Here is a discussion of vertically split rings that may be of some interest. It is about how they are more likely to damage a scope rather than not holding it securely, but could it be that the shop didn't want to tighten them too much for fear of causing damage? https://www.snipershide.com/sh...split-rings.6878478/ ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. I have several ADM mounts and they seem really well made, so I think incorrect torquing by the first shop is likely. They are a rather beefy mount and the recoil of an AR is hardly severe, so my guess is that they got distracted from the job and left them finger tight. | |||
