Many years ago for Christmas I got my daughter a Ruger 10/22 Compct with laminate stock and we ended up putting a red dot on it. Made for a great little plinking rifle. So much so I always thought, “I need to get one of these for myself…”

So the itch needs to be scratched. The only problem is deciding how to scratch it. Sportsman’s right now has a basic blued plastic stock with 18” target profile barrel and a Weaver rail for $239. A local chain has a blued, 20” target barrel with threaded muzzle and the Hogue Overmolded stock for $339.

Then there’s an LGS who has the new carbon version for $599. I was absolutely amazed at how light weight it is at 3-1/2 pounds. Hated the feel of the plastic Magpul stock but loved who it shouldered and fit. I could have Cabela’s ship one up here for $539, but I’d like to support local business and I swore my last gun buying experience at Chelsea’s would be my last.

Love the carbon version but keep thinking I could buy the basic version at Sportsman’s and buy a higher quality after market carbon barrel for it. Like the way the Magpul stock shouldered but like the feel of the Hogue better. I also need to decide if I want a lightweight plinker or more of a heavier target rifle.

I recently shot a relative’s 10/22, it was a little special. I don’t know all the details but it was a Volquartsen(sp?) action, aftermarket stock, then a barrel from another provider.

The action was VERY smooth, stainless, the gun shot very well. I don’t think there was a Ruger part on it, maybe the magazine. I bought 3 regular 10/22’s over the years, this one was nicer than all.

I asked how much was the total cost, he said near $1000. I just throw this out in case you get over $600 or so, another direction to go.

I bought the takedown with the threaded barrel.

If you lean towards a lightweight plinker, there are factory SBR models out now to consider. Either a 8” or a 10” takedown, both threaded and ready for a can.

It's not hard, and it gets as expensive as you want.
Start tossing in Kidd or Volquartsen parts, yeah, the price is going to go up. But if you keep it simple, you're in the $600-$700 range.
I know you WANT the volquartsen trigger for $355 where a Ruger BX one is $85? See how this can add up?!?!?

The only thing I regret is tossing the scope on the receiver. Get a cantilever mount and toss it on the barrel, this way, you're not re-zeroing it every time you remove the barrel.

Well the decision is over, I went with the plinker. Got a stainless takedown model with a gray Magpul Backpacker stock and 3 extra magazines. Kind of like an AR-7 that actually works. Was still debating and ran across this one in 3 Bears and bought it. $30 more than the standard takedown that Wal-Mart had. Was really impressed with the lightweight Carbon 10/22 but decided to go with this instead. Eventual plan is to throw a red dot on it or possibly an LVPO and I'll probably add a Volquartsen lightweight carbon wrapped barrel with the cantilevered optics mount. For now it has fiber optic irons which I can actually see and use unlike the standard irons on other 10/22's.

Strange things going on at Ruger right now with availability. A lot of models like the Charger have been cancelled and most just aren't available. My local shop currently has this model on order for 12 customers and he just can't get any. So saw this one and decided it was going home.

The buying experience was hilarious. For those that don't know 3 Bears started out as general stores in remote Alaskan bush villages. They've slowly expanded around the state and have kept that anything and everything attitude; groceries, hardware, sorting goods, fishing tackle, guns, gas, liquor, beer, etc. So here I am walking out past the housewives with grocery carts in the checkout lines with a rifle under my arm. No escort to the door, visit from a manager, etc. Kind of took me back to the days of my youth with Skaggs Drug and Yellowfront.

Alaska where ATF is not a government agency, it's a convenience store; loaf of bread, bottle of Jack, pack of smokes and an AR-15 all with one stop shopping convenience.

How's the stock trigger on that version? TBH I'm not familiar with the different 10-22 models does Ruger sell versions with nicer triggers? The only one I ever shot which was some years ago had a "not very good" trigger.

Get you a .22 suppressor for it!!!!!!

I put the TinyBeast on mine and the action is louder!

I also put the CMMG ZEROED22 on it and it's even quieter.

The TinyBeast K can is just way more compact. The CMMG comes in a K length and also a dual length option. The Dual is the best deal.

I have the same model and love it.

Mine started out as a 50th Anniversary TD that my wife gave me for my 50th birthday, but then I put the Magpul Backpacker stock on it, a BX trigger, a Tac Sol SBX barrel, Ruger extended mag release, and a Crimson Trace RAD red dot sight, and a Dead Air Mask. It’s one of my favorite and most fun firearms.
