I recently put a Beretta Ultima A300 Patrol on layaway so I was browsing the online manual. On pages 43 and 45, a bayonet adapter for the A300 Patrol and Model 1301 Tactical is illustrated. I'm thinking WTF? Maybe some foreign customer requested this? Any opinions?

It reminds me of the National Guard callouts during the 1960s and ’70s to respond to antiwar demonstrations. It was common for the troops to have fixed bayonets on their rifles, often sheathed, but not always. I believe it was mostly for the intimidation effect although I recall a photo of one bare-chested guy bleeding from an apparently superficial stab wound after he got a little too bold with one soldier.

Sort of like how cavalry horses back when they were common wouldn’t normally charge into a line of soldiers with fixed bayonets. Shotguns with fixed blades held at what we used to call the “on guard” position would probably keep our modern day rioters from getting into the officers’ faces.

Because why the hell not? My 590A1 accepts one. May as well add more "fuck you" to an already intimidating weapon.

Using this, you can mount a bayonet on anything with a 3 slot Picatinny rail, including MLOK/Keymod add-on rail sections.

(Though many of those add-on rail sections likely wouldn't stand up to much actual bayonet use.)

Looking at those diagrams it doesn’t seem very sturdy. Locking into a plastic forend and clamping on the barrel. And even with that, now I want one. lol.

I never paid too much attention to why there was so much hate for the M14, but I do believe it was the last US military service rifle that was capable of delivering a serious butt stroke. As my ETO combat veteran father liked to point out, the only reason to even think about using a rifle as a spear was if both you and the other guy were out of ammo. It always seemed to me, though, if I ever found myself in such a situation, a butt stroke would be far more effective at ending undesirable behavior without delay.

First thing I want to do is switch out that plastic barrel clamp for maybe an aluminum one.

Where I found that image also showed flintlock single-shots with bayonets. It makes more sense with those as you only have one shot and not necessarily a reliable one.

It was intended mainly for defense against cavalry, to be able to create a wall of spears to block the horses and keep out of saber range.

It was a continuation from the "pike and shot" era of ~1500-1700 that immediately predated the flintlock/bayonet era, which featured pikemen mixed in among matchlock gunners within a formation.

But with the invention of the bayonet, every gunner could be a pikeman when needed, and vice versa.
