fritzRemington 40X repeater – what a 22lr rifle is meant to be
On to testing Eley ammo. As usual, I started the day with ranch duties -- yucca removal, which sucks. The day started cool, damp, foggy, and dead calm. I would have considered shooting early if visibility were better. Afternoon brought sunny skies, warmer temps, and wind. On to shooting, with basically the same target setup. I started with a Remington-Eley co-branded Match round. This ammo has shot well in my other rifles, just not quite up to the standards of true Eley Match. Winds were from my 11 to 1 o'clock, varying constantly in speed and direction. Cold clean bore.
115 yards
= left group first. 1" vertical and 1-1/8" horizontal dispersion. .83 MOA vertical
= right group next. 5/16" vertical and 1-7/8" horizontal. .26 MOA vertical
Wind conditions were pretty similar for both 5-round groups. Although cold shooter could be part of the equation, I suspect the left group partially shows the effects of a clean bore with this ammo.
110 yards = 1/2" vertical and 2-3/8" horizontal. .26 MOA vertical
150 yards = 1-1/4" vertical and 2-3/8" horizontal. .80 MOA vertical. Winds were getting interesting here. Mirage in the scope was showing substantial left-to-right winds. The wind flag on my tripod....not so much...sometimes even right-to-left. Hard to judge wind for each shot.
176 yards = 7/8" vertical and 1-3/4" horizontal. .48 MOA vertical. The grass near the target wasn't moving very much, therefore wind effects were more in initial and middle portions of flight.
207 yards
= right target first. 5/8" vertical and 1-1/2" horizontal. Yeehaw .29 MOA vertical. Winds calmed down to just a gentle 12 0'clock breeze.
= left target. 3" vertical and 2-5/8" horizontal. 1.38 MOA vertical. Significantly different wind -- now from 10 to 11 o'clock, with variations and swirl. Shows how one can go from hero to ham-fisted shooter with rimfires in moments.
248 yards = 3-1/8" vertical and 1-5/8" horizontal. .88 MOA vertical.
Overall, decent results from this ammo. But I think the variability in the longer targets shows that Remy-Eley Match isn't quite up to the standards of true match ammo. I don't think it's sold anymore. But I recall it did cost less than true Eley Match. I probably have a box or two left.
I set a couple of new targets for grins.
217 yards = 2-1/8" vertical and 3-5/8" horizontal. .94 MOA vertical, no pic.
150 yards = 1-3/8" vertical and 1-5/8" horizontal. .88 MOA vertical, no pic.

captain127Nice “40-X” these were the inspiration for Vudoo Rim X etc. and even with a donor rifle Elrod’s cost is pretty reasonable for what you get

fritzNext up, Eley Match -- black box. This is great ammo. But a common problem is feeding from certain magazines, due to the flat EPS nose. More on that in a bit.
Winds increased during the process of assessing the results from Remy-Eley Match. However, I think the Eley Match was more accurate than other ammo tested so far -- all groups produced vertical dispersion of less than 1 MOA.
115 yards
Left group first = 7/8" vertical and 1-3/8" horizontal. Vertical dispersion of .73 MOA. Uncertain if the transition from Remy-Eley to true Eley contributed to the vertical.
Right group = 7/16" vertical and 2-3/8" horizontal -- an indication of the wind gusts. Vertical of .36 MOA
110 yards = 1" vertical and 1/2" horizontal. Vertical of .87 MOA. I figured out the wind for once.
150 yards = 5/8" vertical and 2" horizontal. Vertical of .40 MOA. As with the last time on this target, the mirage beyond the target resembled a fast-flowing river.
176 yards = 1-1/2" vertical and 3-1/2" horizontal. Vertical of .81 MOA.
207 yards -- winds are getting hard to judge
Right target = 2" vertical and 5" horizontal. Vertical of .92 MOA
Left target = 1-7/8" vertical and 4-3/8" horizontal. Vertical of .87 MOA.
248 yards = 1-7/8" vertical and 3" horizontal. Vertical of .72 MOA. I was holding a few inches left of plate, as the winds were noticeable. I'll take the results.
217 yards, no pic. 1-3/4" vertical and 3-1/8" horizontal. Vertical of .77 MOA.
