375 Ruger. 30-06 a close second. Thank my stars I live someplace where such a choice hasn't been necessary. Ignem Feram

22 rimfire and 6.5x55 would fill most my needs. Better add .357 max to that too "The days are stacked against what we think we are." Jim Harrison

The holy grail in the Sako fans has always been the .264 Win mag. They are barrel burners, oddly enough the 6.5 CM is right in there with them now!I have 25/06 Sako that has always been a great shooter with 100 grn bullets. Sig 556 Sig M400 P226 Tacops P229 Legion P320 X compact

I'm not really certain what your point on barrel burners is -- if you're equating 6.5CM with 264 WM for barrel life. Let's assume you're shooting enough rounds at a time to get the barrel fairly warm, and that you feel a barrel is toast when it no longer shoots sub-MOA at long distance. A 308 Win might get 6,000 rounds before the barrel needs replacing. A 6.5 Creedmoor should last around 3,000 rounds. A 264 Win Mag might last 1,500 rounds, but could be toast at a little over 1,000 rounds. Your 25-06 is harder on barrels than a 6.5CM -- under similar constraints, maybe 2,000 to 2,500 rounds.

I have rifles using 5.56 NATO, .308 Winchester, .375 H&H, and 45-70 Government. This has not changed since the Nineties, so, I am reasonably well-set, as-is. I have considered adding a “long-range” cartridge, but am not yet sure that I still have the energy to devote to that endeavor. A nearby gun store has a nice, pre-owned rifle that shoots .260 Remington, and I have verified that ammo dealers have plenty of .260 ammo, so I may default to .260 Remington, as a low-cost way to sample long-range shooting. I realize that the .260 is no longer trendy or sexy, but that is OK, as I have aged-out of being trendy or sexy, myself. I have rifles that chamber .357 Magnum and .45 Colt, which are not true “rifle cartridges.” Have Colts, will travel

I got by for decades with a: .22LR .30-30 and a .30-06. Oh, and a 12 gauge. Gotta have a 12 gauge. I still think that's all you NEED.This message has been edited. Okay, now those, those right there are rifles. 1st, please tell me about the .243 and the stock. Is it a 700? I have a Remington 700 5R heavy barrel in .308. It's in an HS Precision stock. But I'd like to put it in a wood stock. Can you tell me about yours? The second rifle. Can't really tell, but it looks like it's on a military M98 action? Or is it an Interarms commercial action? Either way, it's awesome. _____________ "I enter a swamp as a sacred place—a sanctum sanctorum. There is the strength—the marrow of Nature." - Henry David Thoreau

Wait, what? |
For bare necessity, these would do everything I could feasibly need. I have them all in bolt and semi. .22LR 5.56 7.62X51 And to add outside the high caliber lineup, .44 mag, .357 mag and 45-70. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Its a coin toss between 223/5.56 and .308/7.62. But as for the title, I will go with 223/5.56 just because I have more in stock. Sigs P-220, P-226 9mm, & P-230SL (CCW)
