16 APR - Got the scope and barreled receiver in today. 6.2 lbs total unloaded. If I went with lightweight aluminum rings and the CTR it would probably come in under 6 lbs. Ultimately I wanted what equates to a really overpriced squirrel gun, so the weight should be fine for that purpose.

Kidd Supergrade Receiver
Ultralight 16.5" fluted barrel
2-Stage Trigger set to mid field weigh 2.5 lbs
All kidd internals (bolt, bolt handle, mag release)
Kidd Tactical Chassis w/ B5 Sopmod, B5 grip
Leupold 3-9x33 EFR with Leupold rings

Gonna use some CCI Standard Velocity I have once I get some time off next week to go to the range. I'll post back with those results next week.

On a side note, the chassis, unlike older models, came with a built in "gap filler" between the grip and trigger guard.

Older - Put some spares on the chassis to see what it would feel like. Got some B5 stuff incoming.

Rings are here, scope should arrive soon, and the barreled action is on order.

I'm probably no help here, but I've been pretty happy with my factory CHF Ruger barrels. My only aftermarket barrel is a probably heavier full contour 20ish inch Green Mountain barrel on a gun I bought used.

Might I ask why a lightweight barrel? Are you planning to carry it for hunting purposes or looking for aesthetic reasons or? Mine are being fired from a bench almost exclusively, so the BBC weight is marginally beneficial to me.

A Perpetual Disappointment...

Kidd is undoubtedly the best. Both in individual barrels to add to your existing gun or a full build gun.
I attend a few monthly shooting matches where 10/22’s dominate. The ones that run flawlessly are Kidds. All the others including some pretty well regarded stuff ( Tacsol VQ) will choke at least once during the match.

I had a friend that bought a ruger target. Could not get through a stage let alone a match without a malfunction! Even after dumping VQ parts in it, was still malfunctioning once or twice per match. Dumped it bought a Kidd - zero malfunctions hundreds of rounds later. Encouraged me to also buy a Kidd. Been running it a few years, thousands of rounds zero issues. And I am not what you would call ocd about maintenance- after every match I scrub the chamber, reach what debris I can get to with the bolt locked back lube it and call it good. Gun was built 3 or so years ago, hasn’t been disassembled for cleaning since.
There are a lot of good barrels out there by a lot of makers. But if you want it right the first time- Kidd.
Some of our steel challenge shooters are using super light barrels from wiland with good results too

I have a 16” Volquartsen Ultralight barrel, used it to replace a factory bull barrel. Stupid light, very accurate. Since it keeps the same contour, it has the same fit to your existing stock.

An aftermarket barrel will shoot noticeably better than your Ruger barrel. Kidd should be your first choice. Then maybe Volquartsen or TacSol.

I was incredibly pleased with my 16" Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel. Only complaint is, no threads on the front. I don't own a silencer yet, but it's coming.

Hopefully pure novelty.
However my thought process/idea for the build was the tiniest, quietest platform I could build.
In the event I was very limited in what I could bring. That and 1k rounds of 22 would weigh next to nothing in the pack.
That Steiner will get swapped out for something small with an etched reticle eventually.

That's different and I really like it. How does one hold onto it with the offhand, using the pic rail area? is the rail removable?

The pic rail is removable.
It’s hard to see in the photo but if you look on the chassis the front of the magwell is curved and your index finger rests nicely in there, your thumb extends straight forward out the front of the chassis, and the rest of your fingers grip around the magazine.

It’s also so light with zero recoil one can shoot it very easily with one hand.

To be honest it is so light I had never actually thought to weigh it.
But you got me wondering so I just ran down and grabbed it.
It would not even register on the scale by itself.
I had to weigh myself and then weigh myself holding the gun.
In that configuration there (mag unloaded) it weighs 4.0 pounds.

I would not be surprised if the barrel makes up half of that.

Changes made already, the only Magpul grip I really care for is the K2+. However, when you modify the beaver tail to fit the chassis, the overmolding doesn’t have the same adhesion where you cut it.

So I switch to a Bravo grip that comes sans beaver tail. While ordering I picked up a B5 Sopmod. Advertised as same weight as the CTR. In reality it’s half an ounce heavier. I’m gonna stick with it until I can get the rifle put together and try them both. So far though, liking the B5, might work towards swapping out all my ARs if it works out like it feels it will.

Looks good!

I'm a big fan of the B5 Bravo. That's what you got pictured there. I have one on each of my two URGI builds. They lack the battery storage tubes, which I wouldn't use anyway because I don't want to add weight, but they're mostly the width of the SOPMOD.

Apparently they were real easy to find all day long for about $30 until I decided I wanted one in Coyote and then they were like hen's teeth: sold out everywhere and used ones that popped up would sell instantly.

I also like the K2, but in the XL, not the +. It's a big, beefy grip. Really hand filling. I used like the MOE + until the rubber did that melty thing. The B5 looks good on there. I kind of want to try a BCM Mod Chunky, whichever number that is.

This thread has me thinking I need to build a 10/22. I was only half joking about that integrally suppressed barrel, I've wanted one for years. Compact, quiet, and fun. Curious what you'll end up thinking of that Kidd chassis.

Smudge,

I was honestly a little torn with the chassis.

Couple things pushed me that direction.

1. I can claim it helps me with muscle memory for ARs. Weak argument but a little valid.

2. While the X22 has a pretty good grip angle, I wanted to give this a try. The loss in sleekness of a standard rifle stock was a concern, but I also felt the grip wouldn’t hinder me much. If I find it gets caught on branches too often I may go with the Magpul.

3. I wanted to get the rear tang option, and this is one of only a few options for a ready made drop in stock. Kidd only offers modified stocks if you get their full custom build.

4. This is never gonna be a target gun, so ease of shooting from a bench was a moot point.

I may add some Magpul mlok covers just to round out the vanguard a bit but if feels pretty good as is.
