Evening Gents:<BR><BR>So I broke down and finally picked up an AimPoint PRO.<BR><BR>.556 vs .308 - I have a feeling that the .556 would be far more practical, but the AimPoint on the AR10 would be a hell of a nice setup as well.<BR><BR>Both weapons run excellent, and both are good to go. Whichever one does not get the AimPoint will run with irons for the foreseeable future.<BR><BR>So the question is...You should put the AimPoint PRO you just bought on your:Colt 6920Armalite AR-10

That AR10 is not light, nor is the ammo, nor is the force it hits with.

The aimpoint is what I would want on a close range weapon which the Colt is...more than the AR10. Yes both can do either but the Colt can do it without accommodation or sacrifice.

I should probably clarify:

The AR10 in question is a 16" barrel and will not be for long range purposes. I have a 20" heavy barreled AR10 for that role.

However, you are absolutely right. The Colt does absolutely fill the role of a close quarters rifle far better than the AR10.

5.56 gets the RDS.
.308 gets the longer range optics (in the future).

In addition to what's been said already about using the RDS on your Colt, I'd get a LPV 1-6X scope for the AR10 in 16" in the future (LEUPOLD MK6 is what I have on mine).

I would put the Aimpoint on the Colt. IMHO, it suits it better. I would save up for a scope for the AR10. I know you said it's a 16", but I feel a scope will let you take advantage of the .308 better.

I dont think there is any confusion. You now need to buy a scope for the ar10

The 6920! Get a 1-4x or 1-6x for the AR10.

This isn't helping much, but I'd suggest you need a smaller, lighter red dot for the Colt. The PRO would certainly do the job, but why not keep the 5.56 as compact and light as possible? By the same token, is the way you plan on using the rifle such that you're really doing yourself a favor by adding a heavier and bulkier (than a red dot) scope to a 16" .308?

I'd also be tempted to shift the PRO into a meatier mount for the AR10, if only because that thumb screw can come loose whether you're shooting a 5.56 or a .308.

Looks like for the 16" AR-10, a decent LPV might be just the ticket.. something 1-4 or 1-6...ish. Maybe a Steiner or something similar, while Ye Olde 6920 gets the AimPoint.

Il Cattivo: I'd love to go lighter on the 5.56, but budget is a concern. Otherwise, I would have went with one of the Micros or something similar.

Sooo many good choices out there... a great 'problem' to have.

Yeah, especially since you have the precision .308 already covered. A low power variable .308 will slot right between the M4 and the 20" AR10.

Budget-wise, Primary Arms 1-6x scopes start under $300, lots of choices at/under $1k.

If it were me and I were going to do some relatively short range hog hunting, I'd put it on the AR10, otherwise it'd go on the 556. That 7.62 round will generally stop those porkers quite effectively.

Suitable for both depending on the purpose.

Consider an Aimpoint magnifyer for longer distances.

I have a 5.56 HD carbine set up w/ a Aimpoint PRO and my Armalite AR10 has two scopes; 1.75-5 and a 3-9. I use the AR10 for varmints and targets.

Your Colt will be proud to have the Pro sitting on top. Chris

I've got both rifles you listed. My Aimpoint PRO is on my 5.56 and my Leupold 1.25-4x Patrol is on my .308.
