Gents,

This is a perfect magnum rifle, IMHO. A Winchester pre-'64 Model 70 bedded into a McMillan stock. Krieger .30 cal.barrel with 1/10" twist finished to an overall length of 27". Bedded into a McMillan stock it weighs10.5 pounds and sports a Leupold 3.5 x 10 power Vari-X III scope.

My friend is very lucky. If I were given to magnum this is what I would shoot.

Wes

Guessing a 300win mag.

I have a Weatherby MarkV that is a joy to shoot and is a tack driver. I would not mind fitting it into a McMillan stock though. Wink

I sold my magnum when my shoulders got too much damage and surgery. It was a Pre 64 Model 70 Long magnum (was a 300H&H) Barreled with a Douglas in 338. Three shot groups were always 1". Year after year. Never needed re-zeroing. Had a little freebore allowing a longer seating and 74gr 4831. I miss the gun. But my shoulder doesn't

A "good" brake can make shooting a gun like that more than doable. And all brakes are not equal. Albeit, loud. But that is what ear protection is for Wink

I love the short magnums. I lusted for a stainless 70 in 7mm WSM but my friend ended up taking it home. I did a lot of shooting with a M77, a Remington 700 and a Weatherby in 7mm Magnum and the 300 Winchester magnum.

My magnum level tops out with the 300WSM & maybe the Henry 45-70. I’ve been thinking about a 375 Ruger, but really no need. A friend of a relative is maybe selling his 338 mag, but I don’t want to haggle since he thinks the ‘custom’ gun is worth $6000.

I shot one black bear & a bull elk with my 300WSM, though my 284 Winchesters do just as well.

Over the years I’ve went down a bit with hunting cartridges, not up. For deer hunting, a 6mm, 6.5 Swede, or 284/7mm-08 is my usual pick.

With my style of hunting, any barrel over 23” seems to long, my favorites have 20” barrels.

Nothing wrong with variety though.

This H&H is what I’d consider the perfect magnum…this pic is in 375H&H magnum

A few years ago I thought I needed a "heavy magnum" to fill out my rifle collection. I always wanted a 375 Weatherby magnum.
I found a good deal on a new Weatherby Mark V DGR (Dangerous Game Rifle) in 375 Weatherby. It came with iron sights and a fiberglass stock. I installed a 1-4 scope, no muzzle brake.
The Weatherby 375 will shoot 375 H&H magnum or 375 Weatherby magnum.
The 375 H&H rounds were tolerable to shoot but when I switched to the 375 Weatherby rounds the rifle became a beast!
I fired a few rounds of the 375 Weatherby and turned the rifle over to my "good Buddy" to try. I warned him of the fast, violent recoil, of the 375 Weatherby. He blew the warning aside and ended up with a scope ring and blood running down his face.
NOT a fun round to shoot.
I sent the rifle to Weatherby to have a brake installed. They could not do it because there was not enough room on the barrel between the front sight and the muzzle end.
I asked Weatherby to ship the rifle to "The real gunsmith" ( Randy's YouTube title) Randy Selby who is not far from Weatherby.
Randy did a great job removing the front sight, installing a brake, and re-installing a new front sight.
I hope to actually shoot it again since the brake was installed, I'm sure my range buddy's will NOT be begging me to try it out after witnessing the blood shed last time it was at the range.

Dad had a 378 Wby given to him by Roy Weatherby about 1960. Dad got a thick piece of hard leather (3/8" maybe) and Mom made a pocket on a sweatshirt to hold it on Dad's shoulder. He shot it a lot. I never shot it.

The 378 Weatherby magnum is a serious step up from the 375 Weatherby magnum, I can't even imagine how that beast recoils. NO THANKS!
