Gents,

Reconfigured my short M-14 to a new configuration. Took of my USO TS 1 x 8 and replaced it with a EOTech, added a Bradley cheek rest. The new configuration is faster and better handling than the old one, but lacks the long range capability of the scoped model. I see this as a 100 to 300 yard gun. I have others for "reaching out". Banging 8" plates at 200 yards is a breeze...

Please for give the messy pic...I'm re-arranging my office/loading room.

Hold hard,

Wes

Beautiful gun. I need one of those in my life, but a torn rotator cuff is limiting me to just .223 and .22 right now.

Nicely done.

Consider swapping in a forward rail (such as an Ultimak), to eliminate the excess optic height over bore and the need for a cheek riser.

Here's an older pic of my similar setup. I have since swapped the Aimpoint PRO for an Aimpoint Micro, but you get the idea of the lower optic mounting point. It can also allow you to cowitness with the iron sights in the lower portion of the optic window (optic-dependent).

Very cool! How do you like the Bradley cheek test/riser? I use loads of vetwrap and yoga mat material with various loaner rifles and think adjustable may be the way to go (without having to switch out stocks to something like a Boyd AT-ONE).

Gents,

I highly recommend the Bradley cheek rest. Top quality workmanship and customer service. I have several and they are without fault.

Give Brad a call. Prince of a fella.

About to do a Scout Squad and was thinking of using an Aimpoint Pro. What prompted you to switch to the Micro?

Just wanted a bit less weight and bulk. The Scout-Squad with the Ultimak alone is a bit front-heavy already, so having as lightweight of an optic out there was ideal.

But if you plan to use a PRO, it will do just fine.

It's much more solid and higher quality than the included factory scout mount, plus it sits lower. If you'll get a lower ring mount for that red dot, like the one shown in my earlier photo, you should even be able to get a low cowitness with the irons.

The downside is a bit of extra weight on the front of the rifle. The Ultimak weighs ~7 ounces more than the factory handguard and scout rail.

Great looking rifle. How is the reliability with the shorter barrel?

Reliability is just fine on mine. It's a standard Springfield Armory Scout-Squad model, just with the long factory flash hider/bayonet lug/front sight device removed and replaced with a shorter muzzle device and gas block front sight.

This doesn't require altering the gas system at all, or affect reliability.

Gents,

Problem with "Shortie". Failure to chamber and inspecting the thing it may be a bad op rod. I'll change it out and see what happens...

This isn't supposed to be happening.

If'n you want to see irons thru the optic, Ultimak is a must.

Looking good, Arc. (I do prefer the wood, though...)

Interesting timing. James Reeves (our old pal Ordnance Outsellers) at TFB TV did something similar.

I’m surprised that RS Regulate hasn’t made a M14 side rail mount yet.
