Knowing a thing or two about a thing or two |
I have been wanting to pick up another Knight inline muzzle-loader for awhile. I bought a knight LK-93 30 years ago that I changed to 209 primer about 10 years ago. With my oldest daughter a full member I wanted to get another one. For the last several months I was searching ebay to build another LK-93 but didn't find the right barrel that met my criteria. I even put a want to buy add here. So a couple a weeks ago I got an email from knight as I'm on their mailing list for 50% off a brown ultra and pulled the trigger. I wasn't going to pay full price. It came in today and it's nice, real nice. Now to get some fresh pellets and get her dialed in. Needed a more powerful scope to help insure flattops are indeed flattops. Aging eyes. The girls will get the hand me down. LK-93 on the left new Ultra on the right. Both .50cal with full plastic jacket 209 primmer system. HrayThis message has been edited. I’m a Knight fanboy, mostly a few year older ‘Elites’, in 45 and 50 Cal. I think I’ll check the zero today, IL deer hunt starts Friday. I know Blackhorn 209 powder really shot up in price, luckily I have a fair supply going forward. IL opened up deer hunting to most straight walled rifle cartridges. I have a few that qualify but my Knight has served me well. Last season I took 4 shots with the M-L, 3 deer & a coyote down. I went to a breech plug years ago that takes the bare primer. I use the CCIM primer, to reliably ignite the B209 powder. The Ultra-Lite gets great reviews.

I thought about the bare primmer but I got over 200 pre primed full plastic jacket from when I converted the LK-93. I have not had a problem with that rifle with FPJ and it makes handling the primer convenient/easy. On the the LK you have to cap the nipple manually, I got a plastic tool that makes it a non issue and the ultra you put it in the slot of the bolt and shut. Next week I'll take it to the range. Going to use triple 7 pellets. I have 50gr and 60 gr pellets in bound and use powerbelts. Some like some don't but they shoot great out of the LK. Thanks and good luck next week. I have a Zeiss 3-9 Conquest scope mounted. My load has been 110-120 grains volume of B209 powder. For no special reasons I load 115 grains the last few years. I use ‘crush-rib’ sabots from Harvester muzzle-loading. They have a perfect bore fit for me, not to tight or loose. My usually bullets have been the Hornady XTP pistol bullet, 250/300 grain with the 50 cal, 200 grain, .400” with the 45 cal. I have tested the Barnes bullets, they essentially shoot to the same point of impact. I have chronographed my loads with the 50 & 45 cal, 120 grains of powder. I got 1950 fps with the 50 cal, 250 grain bullets. My 45 cal averages 2218 FPS with 200 grain bullets. When I chronographed my friend had his m-l out, doing the same. He had an Omega, shooting ‘Shockey’s Gold’ powder. Once he saw the chrony data, he never used that powder again. It’s the same as Pioneer powder. His results were very erratic, 500 fps slower than B209 with swings over 300 fps. The B209 results were very uniform.

Your load data sounds good, If what I plan doesn't work out I will look into trying the sabots. Thanks Hray P226 NSWG P220 W. German P239 SAS gen2 P6 1980 W. German P228 Nickel P365XL M400 SRP
