Value yes, well built, sure. Reliable, no. Reviews on them are all over the map.

^ This was my main sticking point in creating this thread. Had the PSAs reviewed consistently I would have just bought one and had it done with.

I will look at the riley defense offerings on my next trip to the local farm store. I believe they have both wood and poly options, but I've never looked at one closer than across the counter.
This is making me wish I'd have bought one of the ak mag sig 55x series guns when they were available and relatively inexpensive.

A Perpetual Disappointment...

I would re-read Il cattivo's original post. I think he is providing some good suggestions and advice.

I bought the PSA AR, first time out had issues with the bolt failing to lock open after last round fired. Things got worse next time out with bolt pushing the next round forward then jamming with the cartrige angled upwards and forward with bolt above the cartrige.

I contacted PSA about the problems, after a number of back and forth emails (with several pictures) they have told me to send it back for rpeair/replacement. I haven't yet got around to sending it back, so remains to be seen how things shake out in the end.

I really do like the gun, so hopefully the next time it's a properly functioning AR.

Best readily available budget AK is Zastava. Maybe you can bump your budget a little. Unfortunately, most US makers don't do a very good job with them. Those that do start out at about $2K or higher. Be careful, addiction is possible.

I do have a Wasr that didn't make the photo with about 15-17K rounds thru it. Damn things may have a few QC issues on occasion, but they run like the energizer bunny. Check out AKOU or Mishaco on youtube for in depth education.

Another RD700...
