Another M14 build thread. This time a scout length DMR-ish build.

benny6Another M14 build thread. This time a scout length DMR-ish build.
After I finish my latest M14 project, I have the makings of a "Walter Mitty", or "do-all" rifle. It will be a rifle capable of close-in work with the ability to hit man-sized targets out to 800 yards. It will be a bedded rifle with a LRB M25 receiver (Picatinny rail made into the receiver).
Here are the specs on this one:
-LRB M25 receiver
-TRW bolt
-HRA Op-Rod
-Unitized (welded) gas cylinder made from a new-in-the-tube SA gas cylinder
-Sadlak vented gas piston
-Kreiger unfinished 18.5" medium weight barrel (need to cut a full chamber and crown)
-Vortex Razor HD GEN II E 1-6X scope, illuminated.
-Carbon/kevlar stock, bedded with Marine-Tex
All I need for this one to be done is a M25 receiver now. I'll steal the remaining parts from other builds I don't have time to shoot. It will eventually have a Shooting Sight trigger as well. I'm in the process of filling in the selector cutouts for the stock and then I'll repaint it. Maybe Alumahyde.
I anticipate this being done by the spring of 2024.

WeshoweTony,
That Hueygunner stock sure looks familiar! I'm in the same boat you're in...waiting for an LRB M-25 receiver.
What muzzle device are you going to use on yours. Mine is a Gem-Tech that is very effective and will allow for the use of a suppressor, if desired.
Here's a "reminder" pic of what you really want:

limblessbiffWhat kinda stock is that and where can I find one?
December 08, 2023, 06:13 PM
Weshowelimblessbiff,
The stock is a shortened USGI stock with a 1/2" decelerator pad installed. I'm short and it fits me perfectly. The cheek rest is from Bradley. Paint is from a friend who is a professional painter and has been dubbed "cat puke" camoflauge. All in all a very nice rige that handles beautifully.

Weshowelimblessbiff,
Forgot to tell you that the stock forend was re-inforced with carbon fiber layers. Very solid!

limblessbiffOh ok, was all of the reinforcement internal on the fore end? I got a gi stock but I need to do some fitting to make it fit my spring field receiver. I was planning on putting fiberglass on it but wasn’t sure if I should do it all on the inside or some outside too

Weshowelimblessbiff,
The actual work was done by a gent in California that I know who does M-14 stuff for a few select friends. He's also a professional painter who painted the stock. Very talented. He reinforces the for end with carbon fiber and glued it in place. The fiber was internal to the for end and very nicely done. Use carbon fiber NOT fiberglass cloth. You'll be happy you did. You don't need to put reinforcement on the outside of the stock. Next time I pull it down I'll try to get some pictures for you...

Weshowelimblessbiff,
My friend is building a second stock to match the first, except for color. I'll get pics for you of the carbon fiber layout...

benny6Got my receiver in today! I should have this built and bedded by the end of next week. I'll paint the stock after bedding is done.

benny6I got the action built up today. I put it in a GI wood stock while I refinish my composite stock and get it ready for bedding. It's kind of "mocked up" right now. I still have to tear it back down and give it a lube job as well as get the scope level.
I'll need some higher rings too. The ones I have left interfere with the rear sight. I had to remove the rear sight aperture to get the scope to seat into the rings.
Looking good so far though!

jcsabolt2Nice work!
Have a question...on your receiver pic it looks like the scope mount slides into place since there are bevel cuts and there is a single screw on either end to keep it in place. Have you ever had any issues with things working loose or breaking? Just the engineer in me being curious. Also, what's the screw size?

benny6They're Vortex medium 30mm rings. They are the competition version. I just happened to have these lying around. Although, I would like to have a good quality set of throw lever rings. This is supposed to a fighting rifle and right now I can't use the iron sights if the scope goes down unless I have the tool to remove the scope. Ideally, I can just flip some levers and go. I'm thinking LaRue rings, or something like that.
