Another thread got me thinking about glossy scopes. I looked around and found a couple of older takeoff scopes. The best one is a Leupold VX1 4-12x40. It has the glossy finish. Do these carry any value? Apparently there is a demand for the glossy finish by some hunters.

Its been my experience that used scopes don't hold their value well. Could be a distrust issue. I've bought several over the years, the best being a Zeiss 1-4 variable. The deciding factor was its 30mm diameter. I have no idea when it was made, and don't care. But the new price was up about a thousand. I got a friendly price at a gun show, maybe $200. No sign it had ever even been mounted.

Back in the dark ages, like 1966, I bought a 3-9 variable for my 22. Still works just fine. I couldn't have paid over $25, I was impoverished.

imho it is all about the scope, not the finish. Quality used scopes can be a very good deal. The vast majority of the scopes on my rifles are older used units that have performed flawlessly. Mostly Nikon, Leupold and Bushnell or two, a couple of Zeiss, a couple of Kahles, etc. I have never been able to afford new. It has worked very well for me and my freezer has never been empty.

The VX-1 is not what I would refer to as an older Leupold, so not a classic therefore probably will not command the value of the VX and Vari-X models.
