I've had an Ares SCR lower for several years now. It's a second generation with the improved trigger. I played around with some fixed front sight A4 type uppers, but standard AR sight height is way too tall for even the monte carlo stock. I finally got around to building a dedicated upper for it and this was the test firing. The barrel is a used but apparently not abused M16 barrel 1\7 chrome lined. Sights are from the CZ Scorpion. The rail is a Troy that bolts to the barrel nut. The target is at 25 yards, and is the first time the rifle has been fired. The lower group is Wolf Gold 75gr, the upper group is actual M855. I think it's a keeper.

Good truck gun, if nothing else. I’d be more interested in what it does at 100yds.

Nice. I built a salt & pepper Monte Carlo SCR with a neutered 16” barrel and a side charger upper as my F-governor BlackfaceMcBabymurderer rifle if he’d gotten his ban pushed through. Just put a 36yd zero on the scorpion sights this Friday. I’d hoped that after leaving NY 15 years ago I was done worrying about crap like this. I have to get a few pics.

I actually like the look of the SCR. If they weren't so expensive compared to a traditional AR15 lower, I'd get one just to mess around with.

Agreed. It's a cool concept, and I prefer the traditional stock to the pistol grip for certain applications.

Not to mention it’s more politically correct without the pistol grip ... I’d probably have one too if they were more inline (Price wise) with an AR lower too ... the price has always made me feel like it’s something special for the states that still ban the AR, so they stick-it to them.

I got the lower right after they came out and still payed $450. The complete lower comes with the bolt carrier, but they make you buy the bolt hold open catch. Now the same parts are $600 - $700. I built my rifle for about $750 - $800, but I got the barrel for free.

Ive always loved the SCR look.

Theres rumor floating around the web that someone tossed a BRN-180 upper on the SCR lower - no need for the buffer system, so any stock could be used. Aaand its side charging. It looked cool. Now that i search for it, looks like a few more people have done it as well!

I really like the possibilities!

Finally snapped a few pics. Like the side charger with this set up a lot. The lower is a nice change from standard ar fare. The proprietary trigger is pretty good but the reset is a bit faint compared to standard at triggers. Shoulders and handles well but even with the Monte Carlo style stock low sights and optics are a must. The CZ Scorpion sights fit the bill perfectly.

For function all is not perfect though. The bolt catch spring seems overly strong, it moves free but that spring is stout. That combined with the shallow magazine well that allows magazines to wobble forward is yielding inconsistent empty lock back with everything but 10rnd magazines. I’ll swap out the spring and hopefully that will bring it to 100%

Regarding the lock-back: I went so far as to send in what I assumed was a defective bolt-catch. They sent a replacement, but there is no change in the (lack of) function. Mine rarely catches. Unfortunate...

Dammit... Now I'm going to have to get one, so I can do that, and put a wood stock and wooden MLOK rail covers on it. Big Grin

Is yours the older removable catch or the updated traditional style? Mine is the latter. I pulled the bolt catch and the spring looks to be a GI unit. Took three coils off the spring and now even my weakest feeding HK mag will lock back manually cycling it. I wonder if the pocket is shallow in the receiver.

I did discovered another issue but this one with my Magpul straight 20s. They have just a little extra material that contacts the catch binding in. A few passes with a fine hobby file fixed that.

I had to change the sights to a set of low fold downs because the optic doesn't fit over the Scorpion sights. I zero'd the irons at 25 yards because the USGI hold overs are burnt into my brain. The scope is a Burris 1.5x8 with a bullet drop reticle out to 800 yards. Today I shot some Wolf Gold 75gr, Federal Black 55 gr, Guat surplus, and some Federal M183. With the exception of the surplus ammo, everything else was grouping around 3", and the POA\POI's were just as close. This blows my Mini 14 out of the water as that rifle throws shotgun patterns with some ammo, and never shoots different rounds anywhere close to each other.

SgtGold, what sights are those? I currently only have a scope on my SCR, but am looking to add sights.

They're Troy micro flip sights. They are much lower than the standard AR sights, and work well with the Monte Carlo style stock. The front sight is the HK style, so some AR sight adjusters won't fit between the HK ears.
