Is there a legal way to have the serial number moved from right above the loading port to elsewhere on the receiver?

I bought a Stoeger M3000 of of gunbroker not knowing the serial number is right above the loading port. I want to open up the loading port for 3 gun but cannot do it without defacing the serial number. Is there a legal way to go about moving the serial number so I can open it up?

I think I’d want written permission from BATFE before I did that.
