The old “Prismatic,” or something current?

If you’re referring to the Prismatic, it’s been discontinued for quite some time, so I assume it would have to be found as a preowned unit.

I have one that I acquired shortly after they were equipped with an electrical illuminator for the reticle rather than the small chemlights as first designed. The unit is well made and apparently rugged, but I never abused it or saw any reports of rigorous testing. The circle/dot reticle is similar to the one usually found in EOTech sights and the circle could be used for offset aiming as some people favor with the EOTech. The difference is that the reticle is etched rather than projected and therefore does not require power.

The reticle illuminator is easily turned on and after finding the battery discharged too many times, I switched to an Aimpoint. I kept the sight, however, for the unlikely possibility that I would ever want that type of sight but not have batteries available to power the more common red dot varieties.

One other complaint I had about the illuminator was that its lowest setting was too bright to use with hard to distinguish targets under low light conditions (e.g., brown cardboard against a brown range berm). I modified mine to reduce the brightness, but that was a bit of a project.

The central dot of the reticle covered 6 minutes of angle, which was a little large for precise aiming at small objects, but probably necessary for quick acquisition otherwise. When I bought the Prismatic there were no commonly available low-powered variable scopes with true 1× (zero) magnification. It might still have its uses, but I suspect most people who want a mechanical sight these days would just choose an LPV of some flavor.

But if you’re referring to something else, I’m not familiar with it.

Yes that is the one I am talking about. I am not worried about the red illuminated center and will most likely take that off. Just looking for a good light weight clear one power scope for an AR pistol.

I have a old Prismatic and actually use it on my MPX carbine. Doesn’t get much use, but so far I think I’ve only changed the battery once, so in doesn’t seem to be discharging on its own too much. I do like it over a red dot in that it still has a black reticle if it isn’t powered up. Also, like the included spacers that let you set the height you need. American Defense makes a QD Mount for it, and you can find some Butler Creek scope caps that will fit.

That said, I’m not sure it a good fit for a pistol since it’s better suited for a stocked weapon where you can position your head in the same place every time. Unlike unlimited eye relief red dots, it is still a scope with a relatively small range of eye relief.
