You've got to have the right protection.


I had a Colt 9mm carbine for years, loooong intended to find a DOE upper and SBR it. Finally got around to it.

I think people were interested in these for a while round about the 2010s, then moved on as they do. So I'm catching up to where I wanted to be before these were cool after they aren't anymore.

While it's not auto, I've got an Elftmann single stage in there that will go as fast as you can. It's a real treat at the range, but after 60 yards you're not going to be sniping anybody.

Didn’t those guns come with a Trijicon 1.5 mini ACOG for the Cary handle? Need for find one of the older ones to finish it out.

Did the DOE models "come with" an acog? No, the regular 635+ guns can be seen with all kind of optics on them though. I'm not doing an optic

I like all the modern stuff but historically significant guns from the cold war era are probably my favorite guns just for fun.

I scored a Colt 603 kit back before they were all snapped up. The original Stone/Sullivan design really is a revelation compared to the 308 battle rifles it replaced. For a 20 inch barrel it really is a lightweight marvel that handles incredibly well. And the original rifle length gas system is noticeably smoother than carbine length M4 types.

I have a nice FAL that illustrates the prior step in evolution and eventually will snag an AK just because it is an iconic gun. Probably won't ever shoot the hunk of crap but they are a neat rifle historically speaking.

If anyone is sitting on a Colt 603 kit with the original gas block/front sight base and they need to have a virgin barrel drilled for the taper pins, John Thomas at Retro Arms Works does fantastic work and his turnaround is astonishingly fast. People always say good, cheap, fast, pick two. But John gave me all three. I have no affiliation with him other than being really happy with the work he did for me.

Very nice. I’ve had the thought of building one of those for ages. Had purchased an HK SP5 but you can always add another 9mm sub-gun, right? I like the Cold War era background of yours.

The big difference between these and the HK, is that you have to clean the HK. These will run dirty and dry practically forever, a lot like the UMP/USC.

The trigger is Elftmann's single stage 9mm large pin, because this is an old large pin Colt lower I was limited.

As long as your bolt is ramped you can use any AR trigger, but one made for 9mm is a good idea because of the shape of the hammer. The bolt moves with a lot more force than a regular AR.
