There's really nothing there to cut myself on. I guess there is a small amount exposed directly adjacent to the body of the flashlight, but my thumb stops on the rear of the light.

I make sort-of Mosin-Nagant straps that loop around the barrel in the FSB opening and the slot in the butt to allow a double side sling that can be used for both normal carry and center-back "biathlon"-type carry. I make a separate heat shield from leather to protect the sling. works good.
