While I’m a fan of military history, the M1 is the only battle rifle that I’ve ever considered a”must have.” I’ve sniffed around CMP but didn’t like not being able to specify a vintage since I wanted a WW2. Came close on a couple but was just able to score a late 1944 SA 3.3M with 11-44 barrel on a local trade. Only non-SA part is the bolt, which I’ll remedy. Can’t remember the last gun I was this excited about, if I ever was. Maybe my first one.

Now to restrain myself from getting a spare...

Jim

Congratulations! They are so much fun, and a piece of history. You should be able to get the right bolt with a little research if that’s what you want. Just enjoy it, check the barrel and headspace to make sure it’s safe to shoot.
Oh, and they are addictive! Can’t have just one! Big Grin

first there will be a spare,

then one from each maker,

then one from each maker of each war time period,,

then one from each year (friend did this one)

then the NM models,
then a 308
then the snipers,,

etc etc,

either way, enjoy,
buy some grease, and some enblocs, and shoot

Congrats!!! Great rifles. I love them. Got 4 with enough extra parts lying around all I need is a receiver to make #5.

Jim,

Congrats. Now find the time to make the drive to the CMP rifle range in Talladega and make the Garand's journey complete!

Outstanding. I have a IH model from Korea. Wanted a WW2 Era but mine's fine.
They are fun to shoot for sure and it gets addicting.
Watch what ammunition you purchase as the 30-06' modern hunting rounds can damage your rifle without an adjustable gas block.
Look for M2 ball or the Federal 150 gr.

I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

Yep. Modern commercial ammo that is safe for the Garand will be marked as such on the box.

For example:

It’s gonna be a fun ride! Already ordered a can of the PRVI M1 ammo. Since I don’t have anything else in 30-06 it will be easy to keep the food supply safe.

My introduction to the M1 Garand was in June 1959 at Company A, 9th Battalion, 2nd Training Regiment, on Tank Hill at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Got two in the gun closet now. I would never be without one.

Small world Charlie,I was sworn in December 1959 there.Train ride from Savannah ,fed us ,swore us in,bused us to air port, put us on delta plane to atlanta to a bigger plane to denver to a different plane to dago calif then to ntc for boot.
We trained with 03's the before we graduated the bused us to pentelton and some nice marines let us handle M-1 and we got to burn up three clips and all were qualified marksmen [that a lie] but on paper we were.

Garand rifles are wonderful...
I liked mine so much, I gave it to my son for his 16th birthday.

Time to get another... had my eye on a post war Beretta.

I really want a BM59/62 can't own in NYS Frown
So, I'll settle for the Italian M1

Enjoy your wonderful rifle and feed it right, don't bend the op rod!

M1 Garand is very addicting. 1hr away CMP South store from CMP store didn't help. I ended up with 7 of them.
