Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
Wondering on thoughts by anybody that used one of them. I'm looking at the red/green dot option for one of my ARs. https://www.amazon.com/Vortex-...t/dp/B00HYRGXOY?th=1 I'm not into any competition type shooting, just plinking every so often. 200 yard is the longest range at my club so that would be the most I would likely ever shoot. I have found that green dots are better for me in daylight on the range. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

I have the red-dot version on one of my rifles. Well built, holds zero well and battery life is good. Only complaint is that it's heavy, and prefer the Romeo 3 just for the weight difference. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Be advised that most of the Vortex equipment at or near that price point is made in China. ___________________________________________ "Why is it every time I need to get somewhere, we get waylaid by jackassery?" -Dr. Thaddeus Venture

I have the red/green model on my AK. Works well, and has held up to the .30 cal. recoil. Can't beat the Vortex warranty either, should anything ever fail. Mike You can run, but you cannot hide. If you won't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.

I've had a Srikefire II on my primary AR for a while. My only complaint is the size, it's too tall to fit in the hard cases I have. I like the green dot for indoors & the red for outdoor shooting. The Enemy's gate is down.

You may very well be correct but I understood that Vortex optics were made in Japan. Did I get it wrong? Rom 13:4 If you do evil, be afraid. For he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

IIRC their various lines are manufactured in different locations. The cheaper product lines are made in China, others in the Philippines, possibly some in Japan, and I believe their top-tier stuff is US made.

That rug really tied the room together. |
The low end stuff is made in china. They are DRASTICALLY over priced at near $200. You can get practically the same thing made in the same exact factory on Alibaba for like $30. That is not an exaggeration. They do give you a “lifetime” warranty… and you pay through the nose for it. Battery life sucks at , what, less than 5000 hours? Maybe as little as 1000 hours? I can’t remember. I’d google “50,000 hour red dot” and go from there. Primary arms and holosun sell the later generation models of these red dots that have much better battery life. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

I have one. It works well, but it's old technology. I like the large field of view, but overall the optic is big, heavy, & clunky by today's standards. Dot size is 4 MOA, which would be good for up to 200 yds. For longer range or precision shooting, you should go 2 MOA. If you find one for ~$150 or less and understand its pros & cons, then I'd recommend it. As bubbatime mentioned, there are a lot of good optics out there around the $150-200 range from Primary Arms, Holosun, Vortex, & Sig. A Romeo5 can often be had for a little over $100 if you know where to look.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
I've had two of these. As others have said, they work, but there are better options out there. They're big and heavy, and battery life is lousy...not a big deal if you're ok with turning it on and off every time you want to use it, but for a defensive rifle that's not ideal. One of mine died basically out of the box and Vortex replaced it no questions asked...their warranty claims process was very straightforward and easy. If you're in the market for a Chinesium red dot, I'd look at the Vortex crossfire gen 2 or a Sig Romeo 5...both are cheaper, lighter, and offer significantly better battery life. Their smaller size also reduces the amount that they obstruct your view.

Americans need to stop buying Chinese products. One day at a time, one product at a time. We must state "I will not buy Chinese crap today."

Sticking within Vortex's lines, the current production Sparc is the same price but T1/T2 sized. Holosun and Primary Arms offer similar products. I know the battery life is discussed in the thread...I believe the current Strikefire II has far improved battery life into the tens of thousands of hours. Nothing "wrong" with it, but the micro form factor of the Sparc just seems more appealing.
