Mr. PeteronimanHenry 30-30 big boy, scope preferences
hi all,
I just won a Henry Big Boy 30-30, but I can't see the front site post, on my old Marlin, especially in low light. So, I want to put a scope on it and use it for hunting.
what do y'all use or recommend?
thanks
P

armoredOn a 30/30 lever action I would use a red dot.

P250UA5A 3-9x40 served my Marlin well.

rburgCom'on guys, its a leever gun. Most magazines used to recommend using a low power scope. Since its usually a woods gun, you can try a 1x4 variable. Gives you enough light and you'll rarely need all 4 power. I've got one on a Winchester, and leave it at 3x. Using a higher power might be clumsy.

Mr. PeteronimanI am looking at red dots, but I like the 1 x 4 idea
I wish I could just use the iron sites, but....

bendableMarlin actually sells a .30-.30 lever with a scope attached.
But I can't find which one they put on theirs.
Perhaps you might search better than I.

Mine is a Marlin 30AW & came with a Simmons 8 Point 3-9x40
But it's from about 1998, if I had to guess.

mod29I would probably be looking for a simple, good quality fixed 4-power scope.

Sounds like a good middleground, or maybe a Strike Eagle 1-8?

Mad MaxI put a Leupold 2x7 on my Henry 357. I wanted something that I could use with a lower magnification for target acquisition with the ability to get a little better magnification if needed. Great scope unless you need more magnification for long range shots.

400mI think I’d look for a Leupold 1.5-5x20
Congrats that should be one fun rifle.

That was my decision 15 years ago. Went illuminated reticle as I was hunting bears and the red showed up better as the light started failing. I’ve often thought the lines of the 2-7 Leupold were more pleasing but can’t find a reason to replace that 1.5-5.
