Want to mount on a Ruger Ranch Rifle. Went to the website and saw multiple offerings. Use of rifle would be primarily home defense and occasional 4 legged critter removal (coyotes) nothing beyond 75-100 yards. Opinions of the EOTech model best suited for these tasks?

Happy with a 552 mounted on my 196-series Mini. Frequently shoot it in the 50 to 75 yard range.

I would not use an Eotech on anything but a range toy. I have a few different models and the battery life is abysmal. I would recommend Aimpoint of your choice. Here is an article with some comparisons.

Got rid of my EOTECHs years ago because they were constantly eating batteries when not in use. Even if that’s no longer an issue, the bulk, weight, and price keep me from going back for another look.

If you don’t need night vision capability, go with the EXPS-2. The EXPS-3 is still very popular in SOF circles.

I prefer the EXPS-3. I have no problems with battery life on any I’ve owned or any we issue at work. But, changing out a single 123 battery isn’t that big a deal to me every few months. Whenever I turn it on and the reticle flashes, I still have several hours of use left. And I use the optic several days a week.

I suggest taking a look at the Holosun AEMS. I picked up an EXPS3 early this summer, and the AEMS a few months ago, and I've put at least a couple thousand rounds through each. I would say the AEMS is better suited for home defense based on the shake-awake and battery life. I think the only thing it really gives up to the Eotech overall is the bigger window, but for that, you get a lighter optic on a smaller footprint with massively better battery life plus it runs off solar when it's in bright enough environments.

^^^ And also save you a few $!
Aimpoint is the same. It's a few bucks cheaper for the models without the night vision capability.

As far as the EOTech's
Mine (older 552) was just "meh"... I liked the circle-dot reticle and the size of the glass for my field of view. Outside of that, I found it to be big, bulky and ate batteries. It was on my duty weapon, and was in and out of the trunk of a squad car. YES, I did have problems with the POA Shift in cold weather. That problem has been rectified, and if I had to get an EOTech, I'd go with the smaller EXPS ones.

I like my Aimpoint Comp M-4 and my Sig Romeo. Aimpoint is on my duty gun, and gets pretty beat up and knocked around. I'm switching the battery out -/+ 3 to 4 months. It's held up through a TON of abuse and hasn't failed through some pretty harsh conditions.
The Sig Romeo is holding up pretty well too. Light, small and decent battery life.

I have a Holosun on a pistol. Looking at some of the Sig and Holosun sights, I'm liking the solar chargers on the sights.

This. I have an Aimpoint Pro on one rifle. I have an Aimpoint Duty on another. My SBR has the EXPS-2 on it. I don't run NVG and if I have time to get the rifle out of the safe, I've got time to press a button. If not, that is what the BUIS is for. I leave those up on the ready rifle.

I've never seen any parasitic drain with my EXPS-2 (unlike my older 512 which was garbage in that regard). My zero doesn't seem to drift when I'm shooting outside in the cold of winter or heat of summer despite being zeroed on a cool fall day originally.

I like the reticle better than a single dot. I like having the huge circle to drop on a torso size target if I'm in a hurry. I also like that the bottom tic mark on the ring pretty much exactly matches the mechanical offset from zero when I'm shooting closer than 20 yards or so.

Battery life could be better, but since I change the batteries on my Aimpoints annually as well (just easier to remember to do it all at once) there is no practical difference for me there. The only optic I own that I actually have battery issues with is a Trijicon MRO. That thing is ALWAYS dead when I pull it out of the safe. Between the battery issue and the noticeable parallax, I will never recommend a MRO. Especially now that the Aimpoint Duty exists.

We use Eotechs on all our patrol rifles and haven't seen any issues. Granted, they are all recent production. Some of the older sights had much more significant issues with both batteries and holding zero with thermal shifts.

I like the Eotech reticle for its ability to frame a target at what I would consider usable combat range. Before I retired, we had a mix of Aimpoint and Eotech EXPS-2 optics. The Eotech shooters seemed to engage targets more rapidly with accuracy at the 50 yard range when shots were intentionally rushed.

I'm not a Eotech Fan per se, but for the longest time they where second only to Aimpoint in the RDS game and have been used for both .MIL and PD. The Eotechs were even favored for certain applications.

I'd recommend getting the models jljones recommended. The position of the batteries in the 55X series caused issues with rough handling and heavy recoil, the EXPS series eliminated that problem.

Had a 552 years back but sold it to a guy who traded me a quarter oz gold coin.
I liked it but I like the size of the units today much better.
Still plan on getting one again.

None? The battery life is trash and I've seen several folks in my shooting community have the glass go funky on them. Have you looked at a Holosun AEMS instead? Great battery life, shake awake for home defense, and super rugged.
