I blast it with brake or carb cleaner. Nitride and Chrome finishes make it so much easier.

I like a good scraping tool. I use the Real Avid one the most.

Early on I figured out that a chamber brush is just the right size to clean out the bottom of the bolt channel. That and a small set of dental picks.

In the past I figured for such an important item there must be an 'official' tool But guess what the TM doesn't even bother to discuss this. The carbon issue is totally self limiting. If it bothers you I can recommend the one that MikeinNC listed. But mostly you are just working on general cleaning and for that I use CLP and/or brake clean.

You can also use the case mouth of a spent .223 cartridge to scrape the back side of the bolt behind the gas rings....field expedient.

Gentlemen, I cannot thank you enough for your help.
I have decided on using the tool that Brad suggested along with brake cleaner.
Bless all of you for your insights.

Have Brad get it for you--he's got to be cheaper than retail.
Consider Bore Tech cleaners--no fumes or harsh chemicals. Way better.

Ok, that's the first AR cleaning multi tool I've seen that isn't full of useless features, or is ridiculously expensive.

Hal,

You're a good customer and a good guy. A Real Avid bolt tool is going out to you in the morning - my treat. If you've already ordered one, you'll have two for when somebody "borrows" yours and doesn't return it.

My son just gave me one of these. Have not used it yet. Looks to be made real well and should work very well. I really like the included pin punch. Another vote for the Real Avid.

This is the one I've used. Several surfaces the cover all parts of the bolt.

That is a really cool tool. They didn’t have those when I was in service, but one of those woulda come in real handy.

We always used the same ten rifles for training days and those guns got abused. And we had to clean them at the end of training because they belonged to our unit. The only places that the carbon built up really bad was in the bolt carrier where the bolt tail releases gas...the tool I recommended was what we used for that area specifically, we used a pocket knife to scrape elsewhere.

And if I didn’t already have the other I’d buy one of those doo-dads right now! Very cool tool
