There are many types of 223 ammo, with various market rates.

For 55 grain FMJ that's a ludicrous price.

For a quality plastic-tipped varmint round or a lead-tipped general round, it's a little high for the current market conditions. Depending how much one is willing to search, the going rate on the low end is $1 to $1.25 on ammoseek. Some products are around $1.50.

For match-grade ammo, that's towards the low end on ammoseek. Many distributors are listing match rounds in the $1.50 to $2.00 ballpark.

Yeah, prices are high, and probably will be for some time. I'm not saying it's right, but it's the current state of affairs. And has been for about a year. Ammo listed at reasonable prices sells out in short order. The stuff with stratospheric prices hangs out for awhile.

[Reviving the old thread, having re-read the original post]

The Inciting Incident being the fear of what may come to Virginia with its incoming "leadership," I find myself buying. I'm not in a panic, but I'm "stocking up fairly rapidly" on a couple of the things that I want. If the rumors come to bear, then I'm ahead of at least some of it. If they don't, then I'm in good shape anyway.

Among my peers, I've seen a bit of the 100-50-25 Theory happening. I didn't know there was a name for it before now, but I've recognized that it exists.

Thank you for the article, LDD.

Banning new sales is bad enough, my greater concern is banning ownership.

That is why I am hoarding my .223 for now, and shooting my precision AR-22 instead.

That’s hard to do. The more I go to the range, the more I want to. I find that I can enjoy the range more when I can shoot without the cost going through the roof. Typically I bring 3 guns to the range. The only constant is the Sig P322 . I’ll shoot 50-100 of the other 2 and 400 through the .22. This keeps it fun and manageable. In years past I never even thought about a .22. Today I bought a .22 Savage rifle on a whim. My next pistol will be a Ruger Mark IV. I can stay at the range longer with the .22. I still stock up on other rounds when I see a sale. I hope ammo goes down but I don’t see it turning around soon. I’m fine with any defense rounds it’s just the range rounds that are hard to keep up with. $13 for a box of .9mm is rough.
