If you're gonna be a bear, be a Grizzly! |
The .284 Winchester Model 100 my dad carried for many years killed a ton of deer. It was almost mythical to me. I never knew of him missing a shot with it. I’d give anything to have it but it sits in my brother’s safe safely tucked away for one of his kids. At least it’ll stay in the family. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Triple deuce. I'm lucky to have two Remington 788's in .222 that are just amazing in the accuracy department. I'd like to get another .222, but the word is out and they certainly command a premium today.

I've thought about that, but it wouldn't be his. And with ammo prices being what they are, I'd never shoot it. But they are beautiful old guns. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Age Quod Agis |
I'm a fan of .35 Remington as a pig and deer gun. Light, handy, big hole. I also think that .25 caliber is under rated. It will do damned near everything a .243 will do with light rounds, and almost everything .270 will do with heavier ones. I don't have a .25 Remington, but I do have a .25 Gibbs, which is halfway between the Remington and the Weatherby Magnum in case capacity. Figure 100 grains at 3400 fps.; 117 grains at 3100 or so. I have a hankering for a 9.3x62, a .375 H&H, and a .458 Lott, but don't really think I'll ever own any of them, unless I get a desire (and opportunity) to hunt big bears. That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." I've used a lot of different calibers for big game hunting, but the cartridge I've come to hold in "holy esteem" is the tried and true .35 Whelen. I have a very basic though limited edition Remington Model 700 Classic in this caliber that's proven itself as a perfect choice for taking everything from wild hogs, mule deer, javelina, elk, and even a couple of good sized moose.
