Here in CA, AR's and AK's bring a lot of drama...so I went with the original AW from the 1890's - got a Rossi R92...it's on layaway and then I get my 10-day wait.

Any input for improvements? I'm also looking for a leather cartridge cuff. \

Check out Stevesgunz. I replaced the plastic mag tube follower on mine.

I'll be following this one with interest. I'm particularly interested in your experiences with reliability, how smoothly the gun runs, and what mods you decide to make. I'm a Marlin guy, and have pretty much every caliber that I want covered with those, but with how stupid expensive they have become I've considered picking up a Rossi just for knocking around on camping trips and such.

I've not had an opportunity to shoot one, but I've handled quite a few at the LGS, and they seem reasonably smooth and are interesting in their similarity to the Winchester 92 action. They also seem to be available in a wide variety of barrel lengths and lever configurations. They definitely have my attention.

Also interested. I used to have a JM Marlin 1894 that I'd been wanting to replace, but with their prices and the ugly-ass QR code laser engraved on the news ones, I've been thinking about a 92.

I have a friend who had several back in the early 2000's. He had one that was excellent and one that was junk. I'm hoping they've tightened up their QC since.

If I snag one, this is the first thing I'm changing:

My older model has been a challenge from consistent groupings to an overly-stiff loading gate. I've fiddled with various .357 loads but could never really find one that would even group minute of pig. The loading gate is unnecessarily stiff making it very difficult to load, but there are a few solutions for that on the internet if you're willing to WECSOG it. After a few years of frustration I got tired of messing with it, so it sits in my safe waiting on me to learn patience and spend more money on it via a trip to Nate "Kiowa" Jones. If/when I do, it will come back with a better attitude, a stainless magazine tube follower and the stainless safety replacement button that P220 Smudge mentioned.

But really, the best solution I've found for this rifle is to leave it in the safe and use my Henry Big Boy.

I have a Rossi 92, even put a Weaver 4X Scout scope on it for use as a Deer rifle. That was a waste of money. Groups 3-4 inches at 50 yards. So it's about as accurate as a smooth bore shotgun.

BTW, I also have a 1904 vintage 1892 that a previous owner re-barreled in 357 Magnum with a Winchester made barrel. This one will group under 1 inch at 100 yards using a rear tang peep site.

I've stopped counting.

I have a Rossi 92 w/ 16" barrel and really like it. The only thing it has a problem feeding is soft point or lead ammo due to the lead getting hung up on the feed ramp. Other than that, it runs like a top and is accurate to boot. I haven't changed anything on it but will be swapping the safety out for a plug on top of the receiver.

I have had both the 20” and the carbine. I gifted the 20” to a good friend when I left NC. I still have the carbine. Love it.

List of things of what I did:

I deleted the silly “safety” do-dad on the top of the bolt that kept snagging my hand. I took it out and filed it smooth, then blued it and re-installed it in the fire position.

Also replaced the plastic follower.

Then I took it all apart and ran a file along every edge on the parts.

At some point I snipped off a coil on one of the springs as the gun was chucking the empties into the stratosphere.

And I replaced the front sight with a Marbles(?) front sight with the gold bead so I could see it. The factory one is all black.

It runs every brand of 38 and 357. It won’t feed wadcutters. But those can be fed one at a time.

Neat little gun, also doesn’t get people calling 911 when you pull it out at a wreck to put down a deer.

Slim and easily tucked under a back seat of an F150

I've had 3 or 4 Rossi 92's over the years, mostly in 38/357 and they were always fun little carbines.

About 3 yrs ago I had given my little 16" Rossi 92's away to my sons and decided that I needed a new one for hunting hogs. The websight showed (IIRC) a model called "blued and hardwood" or something like that. So I bought a 44mag 20" version and it was head and shoulders better quality than the previous models I had in the past.

Like MikeinNC did, I took it completely down and dressed every sharp edge, did a mod to the loading gate which (IIRC) was grinding a mild hour glass cut on it and taking all the rough edges off it.

To be honest this newer mode was pretty good right out of the box and feed softpoint 44 mags flawlessly.

The only other thing I did was buy this rear sight from Steves websight which allowed me to really dial in the POA/POI. https://store.stevesgunz.com/i...=2_16&products_id=42

I bought a new one with a 20 inch barrel about a year ago. I originally got it as a truck gun, but that hasn't really happened yet. I have put about 500 rounds of 38 FMJs through it and about 100 rounds of 357 JHPs through it without any problems.

I keep meaning to have that top mounted safety removed, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I did cut off about an inch of the magazine spring to make it easier to reload.

So far it has been a great little gun. I just wish that they had an 18 inch model
