Just added a Sadlak oversized mag release and a Smith oversized bolt hold/release! Do I “need” them? No. Do I enjoy tinkering with my rifles? Absolutely!!

I had always wanted a M1A, but recently found a good deal on a James River M14 with a Bula receiver.

Question. There’s a lot of info in this thread for M1A stuff. Will those same parts/mods work equally well on my M14? IOW, is “M1A” being used generically, or are you referring specifically to the Springfield M1A?

M1A is the trademarked name for the Springfield Armory, Inc. For technical purposes, M1A and M14 can be used interchangeably.

Op, thanks for the close up of the Optic mount. I haven't een one of those before.

Tony a.k.a benny thanks for the post on the gas plug. Am I right in believing thats also how you deal with the pressure generated by M118LR and the like?

That leads to an intrsting follow on question.

The M14 in military service had the ability to fire fully automatic. This feature was disable by removing the selector switch, but as far as I know, no changes were done to the internals. That said I'm not an M14 armorer, nor did I get a chance to disassemble one.

I'm assuming that the M1A rifles have had changes made to the design that prevent it from being able to fire full auto.

Is that a valid assumption? What changes were made?

Yes, there's a full auto lug on the right rear of the receiver that was removed. It housed the selector switch. The operating rod dismount slot was in the middle of the op-rod travel. That slot was eliminated and a dismount notch was moved to just below the rear sight windage knob.

There was also a groove under the front right of the receiver that kept the full auto connector rod in place which is also not present in civilian models.

That's the gas cylinder. It is the same as any other M14. The only difference is that more of it is exposed with the SAGE chassis, although early chassis had a longer forearm which exposed less of the gas system.

Here's what's hidden beneath the forearm and handguard of a regular stock...

Just like an AR-15 front sight, it has a forward and rear band that slides around the barrel. All M14's have two bands on the gas cylinder.
